Moving: no matter what the reason it’s always emotional. It can be exciting- maybe a new job or moving in with someone special. It can be sad- maybe due to a divorce or because of downsizing. When it comes to moving your parents, it can be a bit of both. Keep these things in mind for an easy, organized move.
Respect
Seeing your parents’ age can be an emotional process. The caregiving roles have reversed; the child is now caring for the parent. The biggest tip in moving your parents is maintaining respect. This has to do with including them in the process, meeting their needs, listening to their wants, and being delicate with their belongings.
Communication and Planning
Like all relationships: communication is key. Because moving your parents can be an emotional time, it’s important to be very clear when outlining the process of the move. Important things to consider before the move even takes place are:
- Where will your parents live?
- If they are not moving into assisted living, will they need care?
- If they require assisted living or care, who will be responsible for the cost?
- Who is responsible for the cost of the move?
- What size moving truck will they need?
- Will they need storage? If so, who is financially responsible?
- Is the home safe and easily accessible for older people? If your parents need any assistance for walking, you would probably want to avoid stairs.
Questions like these will make moving your parents into their new home as seamless and easy as possible.
Packing
You may have read in this previous blog post that it’s best to start the preparation process at least six weeks in advance. This will give you ample time to not only get everything packed but to remain organized while you do it. There are a few methods to consider to start organizing while you pack. You can create an organization process where you keep, store, toss, sell/giveaway. Similarly and bluntly, Forbes provides The Four Box Approach: keep until I die, appraise and sell, keep with me, garage sale/donate.
