How to Move a Queen Size Mattress

Oct 28, 2015

Tips for moving a queen mattressWhen you move it is important to take care of all your valuables.  Everyone is always extremely cautious with their television and expensive furniture, but a lot of the time nobody considers their mattress.  The average cost of a foam mattress is $1,610 more expensive than more televisions.  When a mattress is moved incorrectly it can damage the mattress and/or your moving equipment, which can result in fees.  Below are some tips for how to correctly move a queen size mattress.

1. Rent the Right Equipment

Moving Trucks work great to move mattresses with all of your other belongings on a larger move, but did you know there are other options when you have less items to move or are just moving a mattress?  Here is the best equipment to move a queen size mattress.

  • All moving trucks, like these trucks, will fit a queen size mattress.
  • A pickup truck or cargo van will give you the perfect amount of space to move a queen size mattress when you angle the mattress.
  • All trucks and vans are available through U-Haul Truck Share, so you can pick up and drop off on your time, even if the location is closed.
  • If you have more belongings to move, a cargo trailer in sizes 5×8, 5×10 or 6×12 will work perfectly to move your mattress.  If you need help identifying what size is best for you, take inventory of your belongings and ask for help from the moving experts near you.

2. Protecting the MattressHelp moving a queen mattress

Using a mattress bag is crucial to keeping a mattress in good shape during a move.  There are bags that are great for a quick move and will keep the mattress clean.  Then there are bags that also protect a mattress from dust, soil and water and even have handles making it easy to carry.  If you are moving a mattress into storage or a garage you can use a sealable mattress bag to keep it safe from mold, dirt and bedbugs.  For the bags that don’t seal, make sure to tape the open end with moving tape for maximum protection.

3. Loading the Mattress

If your mattress bag does not have handles, a great moving hack is to put the mattress on a sheet standing up.  Lifting the corners of the sheets make the mattress much easier to carry, giving you more leverage.

Make sure to load the box spring into the equipment you rented first.  The box spring should be placed along the wall of the truck, van or trailer you are using. Load the mattress on top or against the box spring.   This will provide the mattress more stability and help it maintain its shape.  Remember to use the 60/40 rule when loading the equipment.

4. Secure the Mattress

Once you load the mattress and any other items that extend the same length as the mattress and box spring, you must secure your items in the truck, trailer or cargo van.  Using tie down rope and the rub rails secure items by tying the rope from top rub rail to the bottom rub rail in a zig zag pattern across the width of the truck, van or trailer.  This will ensure that when you stop the rope will hold the items in place.

Once you arrive at your new home try to unload your bed rack or frame first so you can move the mattress from the truck, trailer or van directly to the frame or rack.  This allows you to only move the mattress once and makes sure you can get to bed quickly after your move.  After a move, everyone needs a good nights rest!
