Is My Move Insured?

Nov 8, 2015

Nobody thinks they will get into an accident, until it’s already happened. Even though you have a million other things on your mind during a move, you should definitely set aside some time to get familiar with what coverage you currently have, and whether it will apply to your moving truck rental. Here’s some commonly asked questions to consider.

Is My Move Insured?

  • Will My Credit Card Cover My Moving Truck Rental?

    • During our research we did not find a single example of a credit card that would cover a moving truck. Even coverage for pickup trucks is rare in the world of credit cards. If you were planning to rely on your card for coverage, be sure to get in touch with the company it was issued by to be absolutely certain the coverage you are expecting is the coverage you will get.
  • My Auto Insurance Policy Will Work, Right?

    • For the most part, automobile insurance policies have a weight limit of less than 9,000 pounds in order for a vehicle to be covered. In other words, it is highly unlikely that your policy will cover a moving truck. Even if it does, keep in mind you will still need to pay the deductible associated with your policy and your rates may increase as well! If you decide you want to rely on your auto insurance coverage, be sure to call your provider to get the details on your policy before you rent the truck.
  • So What’s the Best Way to Ensure My Move Is Covered?

    • Simply put, the best way to cover your move is to do it through the company you are renting the vehicle from. When you choose this route there is no guess work. Plus, coverage such as U-Haul’s Safemove® will cover not only the truck, but the cargo held within the vehicle, and has medical and life coverage as well. You can also opt to add Safemove Plus®, which offers an incredible $1,000,000 in liability coverage in addition to what is listed above. Similar coverage is available for trailer rentals as well, however cargo van and pickup truck rentals are limited to a Collision Damage Waiver which only covers the vehicle itself. Exclusions do apply, so we recommend you take a look at the Damage Coverage page on U-Haul’s website in order to get more detailed information on these options.
