Notre Dame consistently ranks among the top twenty universities in the country.  The university had 12, 179 students as of 2014, with a student-faculty ratio of 8:1.

The undergraduate programs divide into five schools:

  • College of Arts and Letters
  • College of Science
  • College of Engineering
  • Mendoza College of Business
  • School of Architecture

Among these schools, undergraduates can choose from approximately 75 degree programs!  However, as a freshman, you’ll be taking classes in the First Year of Studies.  All incoming students complete the same curriculum their first year and move on to their intended area of study with the help of an advisor.

The university’s campus occupies 1,250 acres in Notre Dame, Indiana–an unincorporated community just north of South Bend.  Recognizable landmarks on campus include the Golden Dome, also known as the Main Building, which is an administration building.  On top of this building is a 19-foot-tall statue of Mary, “Notre Dame” or “Our Lady.”  Also, there is Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a Roman Catholic church on campus that serves as a worship center for students.

Housing on campus divides into 30 same-sex residence halls (14 female and 16 male).  Here are a few facts about campus residence life:

    • Every residence hall has a chapel where weekly Mass is held.
    • Every residence hall has a variety of sports teams (full contact football, flag football, basketball, soccer, hockey, cross country, etc.)
    • Every residence hall is represented in Student Government with one elected senator.
    • Approximately 80% of undergraduate students live on campus
  • Most students live in the same residence hall all four years
