You’ve left town with your loaded truck and are getting ready to find a motel for the night. That’s when it hits you: how will you prevent a thief from breaking into your truck and stealing your cargo? It’s a scary thought but something we should all be mindful of. Here are some tips that will bring you peace of mind and keep your cargo safe as you travel:
Our Cargo Safety Tips
- Before moving, look into your homeowner’s insurance policy. Some policies will cover your belongings as you move!
- Whenever you stop, check to ensure all your doors are locked! Ensure the padlock is on the back truck door as well.
- When parking at a restaurant, ensure all your doors are locked and, if possible, park where you can keep your eye while eating.
- When parking your vehicle at a hotel, you should always try to park your truck or trailer close to the entry doors and well-lit area (under a light post).
- If a well-lit area is unavailable, park your rental equipment close to a building or wall. This can limit the number of accessible entry points into your vehicle.
- If you feel it is necessary, you might want to park your vehicle in front of your moving truck.
- Lastly, always purchase insurance on your moving truck before you leave the rental center. U-Haul offers their “Safemove” truck rental insurance for as low as $14 a day. Safemove will cover damage to your U-Haul truck if it is stolen or damaged by a thief, but it does not provide cargo coverage.
