Grilling Times: Fish

When grilling fish, there are two key things to avoid: don’t overcook the fish and don’t let it stick to the grill. There is a general rule of thumb to not overcook your fish. Add 8 minutes of grilling time per inch of thickness. Below are some tips and recommended grilling times for certain fish.

Fish Grilling Tips:

  • Pat down fish with a paper towel to get rid of excess moisture to avoid sticking
  • Brushing the grill grate with oil will also prevent the fish from sticking to the grill
  • Use a fish basket for more delicate fish such as Tilapia
  • Consider cooking fish a plank of cedar for flavor
  • Clean your grill before grilling

Grilling Tilapia

Tilapia is a delicate fish and needs to be handled carefully. We suggest using a fish basket and flipping the fish only once. Grill on each side for about 4-5 minutes. Don’t forget to oil the grill and season first! Cajun and Old Bay Seasoning works well with Tilapia.

Grilling Salmon on Cedar Planks

Some people prefer grilling salmon on cedar planks for flavor. To start, place cedar planks on the grill for 5 minutes until it smokes. Place the salmon on the plank, cover the grill and cook for about 20 minutes depending on how thick the cut it.

Grilling Cod in Foil

Grilling cod in foil well give you flavorful fish. Place fish fillets into each piece of foil. Add butter, lemon juice, salt, pepper and any other herbs you want. Seal the foil and place on grill. Grill both sides 5-7 minutes. Take off grill and enjoy.

Grilling Whole Trout

When grilling whole fish, it’s best to use a fish basket. Fish baskets give you the most control in handling your fish. Cut lemon slices, onions, and rosemary and add into a fish basket. Some people choose to cut slits in the fish and fill the cavities with spices. Grill on each side for 6-7 minutes.
