I usually have nothing but great things to say about U-Haul and have used U-Haul many times for moving, daily tasks, and for years of storage. In fact, I've even thought about trying to open or buy a U-Haul franchise before. I think it is a great brand and service, so I was especially disappointed in my experience and the fact that no one offered as much as an apology let alone any compensation for my experience. I should say, this is really NOT about the Augusta facility. My concerns this time are about the whole U-Haul system. I just can't figure out where to give that feedback, so here it is... This time was not really as good. The person checking us in at the Augusta location was great. The person checking us out in Grand Rapids, was good and empathetic, but didn't/couldn't resolve my concerns. What is a customer left to do? It feels like U-Haul at a national level has some responsibility, but I can't figure it out. The 26' truck came with cruise control installed at the steering wheel. This was important because I have a bad right knee and was going to need to drive two days from Maine to Michigan. I didn't ask about or use the cruise control until I was in Massachusetts because the nature of the roads in Maine and the size of the truck didn't make that necessary or appropriate. However, when I hit 495 around Boston, I tried to turn on the cruise control... It didn't work! I called the national U-Haul number roadside service. They transferred me to someone else and someone else and no one knew what to do or whether the vehicle even had cruise control... which was right there on the steering wheel in front of me. So, I called the Augusta U-Haul and was told by a young guy who answered that he didn't know anything about it and recommended I call the bigger U-Haul in Brunswick. I called them and they also couldn't help me. They transferred me to the Regional something or other who said she was basically an admin next door to the Brunswick shop, and couldn't tell me anything. She was very pleasant and put me on hold several times to try to find answers or someone else who could answer for me. Eventually she told me to divert to the Lowell, MA U-Haul, which is owned by U-Haul and could sort out the issue since they had mechanics. She would let the store know I was coming and what needed to be addressed. I went 20 mi RT out of my way through city streets to get there. They said they hadn't heard from anyone about anything and didn't have a mechanic. They also had no answers. They again were very pleasant and even tried to reach former mechanics to find out more about what to do. The question on everyone's mind was, does this truck have cruise control or not? Or does it have it and its not activated somehow? No one seemed to have any definitive answers or any path toward figuring it out. Hard to say what the answer to that question really is even now. As a customer it was an expectation set by the very presence of the system on the steering wheel. It was also quite befuddling that people at U-Haul weren't sure of whether it existed - while I pointed right at it and no one could say if it was an issue of activation or not. It was overall quite problematic and frustrating. I went on the road having spent a lot of time on the phone with several U-Haul staff and no resolution. The last half a day or so, I was driving with my left leg crossed over to the accelerator and brake because my right knee couldn't take it any longer. A couple days after arriving in Michigan, I had lunch with my brother who had just done a move and had two vehicles from U-Haul, both with cruise control installed and both worked. I really do think that U-Haul owes me some compensation and an explanation. If I may share a couple other things: I originally thought of using PODS because I needed to get things out of one house, but stay nearby to work on the house to get it on the market, and then move the items to Michigan and keep them aside while I made preparations of the house in Michigan. (I realize U-Haul offers a free month of storage, but no one wants to empty and reload a 26' truck!) In any case, I called the U-Haul facility in Brunswick and asked about keeping a truck beyond the normal 5 days allotted for my move from ME to MI. I asked about keeping the truck extra days and the associated costs. They said it would go to additional daily rates - 39.95, I believe was the rate. So I did the math and figured out that if I rented the U-Haul 26' truck, loaded it over a course of days, kept it in my driveway (under my homeowner's insurance and my vigilance) while I cleaned and did some chores on the house before putting it on the market, and then drove to Michigan, parked in my driveway (again under my homeowners insurance and my own vigilance) while I made room and prepared some areas of the house to move it, all over a period of 30 days (similar to the PODS allowable time), I would ultimately have double the cubic feet of capacity and the same timeline, for the same cost. Also, I was leery of putting my belongings in a PODS unit where they take it away and I can't see how things are treated, what the security situation is etc. And I prefer U-Haul, so this made the choice for me. Unfortunately, what was never said to me was that the insurances I paid for would be added to that daily rate - even though those insurances are largely roadway type insurances. So, I had a big financial surprise at the end of my rental. Disappointing. I guess I should have figured this out somehow, but it would have been nice to have this clarified as I tried to calculate my comparison pricing. Thank you for reading this long bit of feedback.

SCOTT KI would recommend it because Uhaul has a monopoly in the area and customers who need to move have no other choice but to use Uhaul. Good for Uhaul, bad for customers. The truck I rented was filled with dust, the back had not been swept. The truck twice got stuck in gear at low speed, sending the RPMs to over 4,000 at just 10-15 mph. Staff seemed unconcerned when I told them about it. No staff showed me anything about the truck, including the Tow/haul button. Had to figure out the door and ramp mechanisms myself. My normal size/shape coffee mug twice fell out of the cup holder on basic hills. The truck odometer read 13,000 miles but the truck drove like it was a very old vehicle. The truck also had less than half a tank of gas when I picked it up, even though my paperwork said it had half a tank. All in all, like a lot of things in Augusta, Maine, the Uhaul there seemed mediocre at best (which is why I'm moving away from there). Understaffed, staff seemed apathetic (with the exception of the woman there when I picked the truck up, who was stuck working by herself), truck in poor condition (at minimum needs transmission service).

Also observed the attendants check in the truck and immediately parked it back in line after only wiping down the steering wheel and floor board, ignoring the fact that I mentioned the windows and mirrors needed to be cleaned.

I had a terrible time with the ignition key and my friend had to start the truck every time it was shut off. Luckily they were there when I needed them. Otherwise I would have been in a bit of trouble.

They did not give me a time/day that they could do it only they'd call me when they can. I didn't hear for 10 days, so i called. They told me again, they didn't have a time but to call again in a few days, so i did. I got someone else who was incredibly irritated that i was calling to have someone cut the lock, and repeatedly told me that wasnt something they did. I tried to explain someone else had already told me that they'd do it. She eventually agreed to have someone cut it. Again i waited for 10 days, heard nothing and then whenever i called no one answered. I finally got ahold of the same individual who told me it couldn't be done and after almost a month of a run around she told me its just not going to happen. I eventually paid for someone to cut the lock however there are no outlets in the storage facilities so he essentially had to smash the lock off. I would give the communication of this facility 0 stars if i could. Won't be doing buisness here if I can avoid it.

I was offered a larger unit at the *standard* price. Since U-Haul did not honor my reservation, you should have at least honored the price on my reservation. Otherwise, this is just a game U-Haul is playing because finding an alternate storage provider in the area with the desired size and price is impossible to do on the day of move-in. I do not understand the purpose for U-Hail to offer unit reservation if they are meaningless… And giving me a free lock is ok, but I didn’t ask for one, nor did I need one. I had the lock that I purchased from UHaul in May (plus the one I had purchased in May 2022). Further, the unit I was given had a rat poison container inside. Why would I want to entire rats to come in to my unit?

I have two critiques that made this a 4 star experience rather than 5 star. 1) I had a upper level locker which required use of the portable staircase. The opening at the top of the staircase was too narrow to easily passing U-Haul medium and large boxes into the locker. Therefore, we had to lift the boxes over the rail. I would have expected the staircase to be designed to the dimensions of the U-Haul boxes. 2) The units are billed by the month, and the rate is not prorated if I move out mid-month. I went one week past my bill date, but paid for the whole month. I'm sure they rented out the unit after I moved out and effectively collected double payment for the last 3 weeks of the month. I leaves a bad taste.

I stopped by today to ask some questions and change the lock. I also called about getting extra insurance on my things and no one could answer my question? Please let me know if I can purchase additional insurance. The truck I rented was a clunker and I had concerns about it breaking down. It was an old moving van. Im sure you have newer models. I also tried to change the lock into something that could not be picked as I am concerned the lock I was provided with can be picked and my things stolen. I hope you can understand my predicament and watch out for my unit.

I’m allowed to be frustrated that my confirmed reservation was cancelled and charges from UHaul on my debit card could not be located and refused to give the merchandise purchased without the researched receipt. Bad customer service for such a high priced storage unit. Let’s hope the rest of my interactions through out this process improve.

First, she took my initial phone call, answered all my questions and made me feel comforted in having to handle a last-minute, unplanned move of my college student due to coronavirus. Then when I arrived from NJ the next day, her smiling face met me and she again calmly explained everything and got me set up. This is my first time renting storage; she was patient, helpful and didn't rush me. Then I made three trips to the facility in the next 24 hours. I was impressed with the cleanliness, the access to carts, the security, etc. I can't say enough about how Heather went above and beyond and how all the little things she did added up to reducing my stress in a time when I greatly appreciated it. Also, thanks for the one-month free for displaced college students. I thought that was a very classy and empathetic move by UHaul. You earned my business and Heather is the reason you'll keep my business.
