I rent vans from this location regularly (50+ times per year) and have never had a bad experience - with the exception of today (6/1/25). I made a mistake about what time I was meant to return the van - I thought I had it through the end of the day, but received a call & voicemail saying it was due back at noon. I called back to apologize for the confusion and to update the Uhaul staff about what time I'd be able to bring it back and was extremely disappointed with the customer service. Something similar happened several months ago, and the agent on the phone was really nice and understanding. This time, the agent I spoke to insisted several times that I bring it back at 2:30, which I tried to explain I wouldn't be able to do (physically/logistically it just wasn't possible). After some back and forth she asked what time I would be able to return the van, and I told her by 5:00 that day (this was the original time I told her when I first called back). She then told me that if I didn't bring the van back by 5:00 she was going to call the police and report the van stolen. I found this to be a pretty extreme and unnecessary escalation, especially considering that I had already explained to her that I made an honest mistake about the return time and told her I would still be bringing it back that day. Every other time I've interacted with and spoken with reps/agents at this location has been excellent. The counter staff and as well as the staff that processes vehicle drop offs are always really nice and friendly. I was really surprised and disappointed that this one staff member (who I've never interacted with before) was so confrontational and aggressive. I did acknowledge that the drop off time was entirely my mistake, but I felt it was extremely rude to threaten me by saying that they're going to call the cops on me and say I stole their van when I made a simple mistake about when I was supposed to bring it back.

I took an overnight flight from Phoenix to Chicago, jumped on the train at O'Hare to get to the location, waited in line briefly, and received great service and care. The only issue was I was billed for 54 rental moving blankets when I only received 48, but other than that my experience was very positive. Would use again.
Dennis MMy wife had a much better experience a few weeks ago, but after doing all I could to ensure a smooth rental, given I was on a tight timeline, I ended up with keys to two separate vehicles that were both blocked in. Took over an hour on calls and chats with customer support to get access to keys to a THIRD vehicle and by then the location I needed to get to was well past closed. Everyone I spoke to was otherwise lovely, but whoever was tasked with parking vehicles and assigning keys to reservations failed pretty badly that day leading to a very poor experience.
John KThe front desk staff was completely unprofessional and laughed at me over the phone when telling me they needed to move my 7 am wiring appointment to 2 pm which delayed my whole trip. I was told the wiring would take about one hour and we waited for almost three. The staff member that hooked up the trailer to my vehicle incorrectly set up the lighting wire so it was dragging on the ground when we drove and eroded to the point the lighting didn't work for the trailer and we got pulled over for not having working lights. I had questioned him on this before leaving but he said it had to hang low to allow for the trailer to turn. I had to go to a second Uhaul location on my road trip to replace the cord where the worker there showed how the electrical wire is supposed to go through the metal coil to avoid this exact issue and couldn't believe the previous location set it up that way. They also didn't properly charge me at time of service and kept calling as I was driving to try to take my credit card information over the phone. I have never left a review for a business before but I would tell anyone to avoid this location at all costs.

I did have a handicap placard present in my car, but I found the question from the agent highly offensive and boarded on violating HIPA laws. Was assured my delivery of two U-Boxes would be delivered at or after 3 pm by one representative, only for a different representative to call me the day before delivery to "confirm" my U-Boxes would be delivered in the morning. Had to cancel my delivery because of it. Next, I requested that my two U-Boxes be put on one trailer, and was assured they would be by yet another different representative. I arrived to find them on two separate trailers, requiring me to drive back and forth multiple times on the day of my move-in, adding stress and unnecessary time to my move. The only person I would say was helpful was the dockworker, who was consistently helpful and available for pick up and drop off of the trailers.

ADRIAN MWe rented after hours using the app. The code for the lock was wrong, support assigned us to 3 more trucks that didn’t have keys. Then they assigned us with a truck with a key in the lock box. Once we drove off, they called me back and said I need to return it since that truck is being repositioned to another location. After over an hour we finally were on our way. The pick up process was very frustrating.

Anita C | Overall ExperienceMy review should really be for U-Haul Moving & Storage of Portage Park (4301 N Cicero Ave, Chicago, IL 60641). I originally booked my rental at this location, but on the day of my reservation, I was unexpectedly transferred to the Avondale location without any prior notice. I’ve used U-Haul countless times over the years and have never experienced anything like this. The change added unnecessary mileage to my planned route and cost me an extra hour of time, making me late for my scheduled appointment. To be clear, the team at Avondale was fantastic—my experience there was excellent. However, I strongly suspect that someone at the Portage Park location made this decision, which seems to directly contradict U-Haul’s “guaranteed booking” policy. This was frustrating and inconvenient, and I hope U-Haul addresses these kinds of issues in the future.

Mark WI had a very poor experience because I had my UBOX stored in this facility and I hired a moving company that partners with Uhaul to pick up and drop off my box at my apartment. this Uhaul facility was aware of this. When my mover went to this facility to pick up the box, my box wasn't there and no one knew where it was. it turns out that transportation group moved my box to another facility further away and didn't tell anyone. this resulted in a lot of time and money wasted- I had to take off work that day along with my brother and my boyfriend. I also had to pay to reserve the freight elevator, and I had to pay for the mover's time since he went to the facility and had to come back empty handed. I then had no time to get the box delivered since I had many personal events - so I had to store it an extra four months and pay for that when it is ultimately Uhauls fault they misplaced my box. everyone I talked to about said this is unacceptable and I would like to be compensated. I have asked the manager to call me at least 5 times and I haven't gotten any call or even an email.

Every question I asked was met with annoyance and an eye roll before being given blatant lies as answers. This all ended up with me being charged near $200 more than what I was quoted, which overdraft my account. I had to wait for 3 days to have any of these transactions to complete so I could reach out for help. Then the help center told me they’d put in a full refund, they meant refund one of the extra $67 charges that they added to my profile, not the $120 false charge or the original charge that went onto my account. This interaction has been completely unprofessional, and even more scummy. I do not plan to use this company ever again.

Also clarify with local stores what dates are available - Bozeman did not want to deliver my pod on the weekend even though a Sunday is the date I’d selected for delivery from the beginning.

Sarah POverall we were really happy with the U-Haul Moving experience. The company we hired to bring the two U-Haul containers to our condo were great to work with even having to deal with a winter storm and going up three floors. They did a solid job packing the containers in a safe and organized way. U-Haul then delivered the containers to our new home across country earlier than we expected. We had only one item break, which was of lesser value. We were very grateful given we had approximately 100 boxes, plastic containers, a small amount of furniture and a huge treadmill. After we unloaded the containers U-Haul picked them up timely. The communication with U-Haul during the whole process was excellent whether it was by email, phone or in-person. Everyone I spoke to was professional and easy to work with.

ROBERT JI rented a 26' truck 2 weeks ahead at another location. They called me 2hours before I pick it up and said my truck isn't available. They redirected me to this location, after I explained I need it to pass a driving test at the dmv They gave me one.i went to the secretary of state office where I was told this truck doesn't have an inspection sticker,and sent me home. I asked for a refund and was told the manager is on vacation and there is nothing that can be done.over all a waste of money and time. Now I have to call and go back and the manager is only there from 7am to 2pm so we'll see. That's the short story

Unfortunately, the larger sliding load-in doors did not open, and we couldn't get in contact with anyone to sort out what to do. We made it work with the regular single door, but it was definitely an annoying (though small) inconvenience. The zip tie was still left on the locker, which I thought meant it still was not ready for use, and the dimensions of the space were not as expected. Granted, I may be partially to blame for this part, as I thought it would be 10' horizontally, not vertically. The combination of all these smaller things paired with the general stress that comes with moving just made for not the best experience, and I will have to move my items out to a bigger unit.

This past weekend, I had both a locker and a truck rental, and attempted to reach branch staff more than 10 times by phone, and all calls rolled unanswered to the national help line after 5-7 local unanswered "rings". Over 7 months, callls to branch during business hours were answered in-branch less than 5% of the time. My issue this past weekend was with a 15' truck with an undisclosed 3' x 6" open gash in roof hidden by door when retracted, and not visible from outside unless a ladder was used, but which let rain water drain in on contents while driving in Saturday's rain, causing me to pull over in shelter and delay my delivery an extra day. re: storage unit, my rent was just increased after only seven months, so I just chose a less expensive competitor this week.

When I made my truck reservation, I saw a message on the site that said you could get a month of storage free with a truck rental. So I did that. I was then very surprised when I arrived at the storage facility, saw even more signs advertising this special, and the full amount was charged to my account anyway. I went to the office to try to straighten this out and get the special I ordered and was given absolutely no help at all. Nearly every response to my questions were "I don't know". The best she said she could do was offer me a free lock. (?) Which I don't need since that already came with the unit and doesn't at all solve the problem. I then had an issue with the access code to the unit. I showed the same employee my access code and asked for assistance since it wasn't working. She again responded with "I don't know" and mentioned something about purchasing extended hours access...which I have no idea why I would need since it was not even close to being after 10pm. Thankfully I was able to get in myself, but I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to someone else after the terrible experience we had. If this issue was resolved, I would raise my rating, but as of right now this place barely earned 1 star.

I went inside to pick up a rental truck and check-in for my rental unit to provide my renters insurance, redeem my free lock and the free month of storage email that I recieved after renting the truck. I was told I needed to get back in line to handle my rental unit after picking up my vehicle because there was a line. I went to the truck and pulled it up to the entrance and the door was already locked 15 minutes early. I stopped an associate to ask if I can be let in, I was told no and that my lock would be in the storage unit. When I found my unit there was no lock provided, I then pressed the customer service button in the facility and was told to come back to the store. I retrieved the lock but was refused when I tried to discuss the free storage promotion. Once I moved my belongings in, I realized that the latch was stuck and I could not close it to lock it. My husband had to run to a gas station to get WD40 just to get the latch unstuck. Overall, it was a very negative experience.

I reminded her about my reservation and that I checked two times over the phone, a few days prior to that day and she showed no concern, referring me to the 800 number even though she has full access to that facility on Kedzie. I said, can you offer me something else since I counted on this space and I just got less attention and care as if she just wanted to skip serving me as a customer. she insisted no one has moved as of today, then no unit were to be available. I had a feeling she wasn’t doing her job. Asking to speak to her manager, Charles, I finally realized that they do have two units available. Charles was very professional and I’m only dissatisfied with the staff poor communication and service. I had put all the efforts to reserve a space, and even double checking by calling the 800 number and the facility itself, and had I not been helped by the manager, who was temporarily outside at the time of this whole encounter, all my moving plans would’ve been ruined. It’s the first time I’ve had to experience such attitude at a uhaul. Thanks!

The staff was amazing they are very fun and make great jokes. That hill at the front is a bit treacherous but i made it up fine with out any damage to my garbage. I also rented the biggest Uhaul truck I have ever driven there and that was very intimidating but i made it back safely. Great experience thanks for holding my crap!

I only used the space for a month or so and started seeking other locations because the $97 rate was going to strain me due to my recent unemployment. I found a similar space down the street that was $61 cheaper. The staff at this location we’re also not cordial or friendly. Their demeanor was more like,”I’m just here to do my job. Don’t want to know about your day or you.”. Don’t get me wrong, everyone has a bad day-but I experienced this attitude from more than one person on more than one occasion.

I prepped and reserved those two services online to speed up my visit on site but my visit took longer than expected due to some errors at the front desk. After my initial check in the storage unit process was not completed. I was also directed to a unit number that was in use by mistake. Not a great customer service experience. A side note: during my visit the U-haul reps were not wearing their face masks. They were however behind their plexiglass desk shields. My understanding it is strongly enforced by CDPH and BACP and may be something Uhaul upper management will have to review immediately.

I love that the unit is armed when I am not there and is easily disarmed when I arrive. There were carts to use for free. I had all my stuff moved into a unit within a few trips because of the carts. Also we had taken the time to pre-register with our drivers license info. But when we came in to pick up keys, the staff was not able to load our reservation (problems with the network, they said) so they had to do it all over again. That's pretty frustrating when you're trying to avoid close contact with people and you've also spent your own time to take pictures of licenses etc.
