Self service centers without useful staff or directions that align with the online directions is another sign of a declining society. If U-Haul wants to run a business, actually run it. Don’t make me do it on my phone. Trucks were clean, at least.

I come to the Capitol Hill location because of the good customer service and friendly atmosphere. Other locations are closer and larger, but I like to stick with a good thing. Jenai, the manager is first to arrive at 7am. She is always available for questions and gets back to you when you ask for help. Adrian and Alvin, whom I also see a lot, are very competent and can accommodate people like me who are special needs. On my last trip, a tire went flat, I scanned the QR code on my receipt, help came quickly, a man by the name of Christopher Williams. It was a difficult job, the truck was fully loaded and parked on a steep incline. He really hustled and muscled. He kept at it until he had jacked the truck up far enough to swap a tire. We kept our schedule! Thank you.

KARL SThe desk associates were very helpful. They switched a rental made accidentally to a different day and the ease of getting the truck in and out helped the move tremendously.
JOHN TWhere to start, there was the last minute bait and switch on the reservation type that forced me to use their mobile pickup and drop off which requires egregious permission for location tracking, there was the threats from staff that my not wanting to allow location was "suspicious" and weren't going to rent the truck to me, there was their assurance and flat out lie that they only access location when you pick up and drop off the truck, my device logged 57 location accesses from U-haul services over the course of ~7 hours after I allowed it access to my location at the time of rental, which was my concern because I specifically opted to not do mobile pick-up because of the privacy policy around location and tracking of it. So, to say I'm dissatisfied is an understatement. Absolutely gross practices.

EDMUND BThe on-line check-in was tedious and difficult to manage. It would have been much quicker to check in with a live agent who was just sitting there waiting for us to resolve technical questions. Uploading the driver’s license was the most bothersome. I recommend an interface better suited to Apple users as well.

Jaime CI was not a huge fan of the whole verification/reliance on mobile phone process. The sign-in process was the longest I can recall for U-Haul and the tech did not work as reliably as I think the company presumes.

The managers vehicle was blocking the truck so I had to wait awhile until she returned so I couldn’t leave immediately and wasn’t able to return properly

Chibuzo NMy UHaul engine overheated while driving and I was put in a dangerous situation on the side of the highway and had to wait an hour and a half for someone to come check and repair the truck. He confirmed there was NO coolant in the truck and there were no leaks, which means it wasn’t safe to be driving. This caused massive delays in my move and then I was charged extra for it.
MARLEY HManager was incredibly rude and aggressive and not helpful in helping answer questions or provide assistance.
JACK SShenita at the front desk and Alvin at check in were both patient and kind as I navigated my first rental in a very long time. Van worked out fine and was much easier and more affordable than I had worried it would be - will definitely rent again soon!!
ROBIN KSpent an HOUR trying to find the key drop off box, even after calling the 24/7 line. The box is located on the opposite side of the dominion energy building. Almost too many uhauls to fit ours in. Terrible experience.

GEOFFREY MAlvin was the staff person who received us upon arrival. He showed us how to access the app on our phones so that check in was very mouth. Very friendly and capable.

MADISON AThe checkin and checkout were separately but similarly awful. I didn’t want to do everything on an app and it added so much unnecessary time at the beginning and end. Especially at checkout, it was so unnecessary for me to do everything and take all the pictures when there was an employee there who could have just visually verified everything for me. Waste of my time and unprofessional. The company may be trying to save money on personnel but as a customer I’m clearly not saving any money from the company’s cost cutting and unprofessionalism.

ELISEMARIE K | Overall ExperienceThe check in process is horrible. Licenses should be verified before making reservations not when picking up. Also, for DC locations, the geography of the area means this location could be the most convenient for Virginia/Maryland drivers. There should be some kind of agreement. The check in process took so long that it went 35 minutes into my reservation, which threw off all my other reservations.

Brent OThe windshield was dirty and the windshield washer fluid was empty or not functioning. The app is beyond frustrating to use. I should be able to scan my license when I place the rental order not at the last moment when I am in the dark and it is freezing cold. In fact I loaded my license the last time I rented so I should not have to do it again. And the app implied I just needed to lock the van and drop off the keys. It was only after I left that it got around to loading another window asking for milage and fuel level, etc. Check out ZipCar for a well done app.

ALLEN GEven though there were 3-4 people working behind the counter, none helped me check into the rental, even though I had chosen "Pick up at Counter" when making my reservation. They required I checked in with the U-Haul QR code. There is littler service in the building and it took a very long time to complete this process. Then, when we got to the van finally, there were 3-5 inches of snow all over the van. We had to find a broom and remove all of the snow so we could safely drive. Then, when we tried to start our drive (after taking photos of the van), the tire pressure was low. It took another 10 minutes to have someone fix our tire pressure. When returning the car, we were instructed that we had to use the app to check-in, even though there was a man working. The app is absolutely atrocious, and force quit on me twice. It took over 15 minutes to check the van back in. This was not a good experience at all.

JONATHAN HI don't know where to start - the staff was rude. The front desk wouldn't check me in. She made me use the mobile check-in, which I hate because the process is so bad on a mobile device. I specifically select counter check in when I reserve a truck, because I know how bad the mobile check in is. That didn't matter - she made me do it on my phone and stared at me while I did everything on my and struggled. Every time I had a question she seemed mad that I asked something. Too busy talking to her colleague about getting breakfast and her baby, which was apparently in the showroom storage unit behind her?!? The truck was FILTHY - the interior was covered in a sticky substance, huge holes in the seats, gas cap was broken, visor broken - I could go on forever. Staff on the lot made me go into a storage shed and get the dolly and furniture pads I paid for in advance - didn't bother to help, just pointed me to the shed and told me to get it myself. I've rented from Uhaul for years, and I don't expect a lot, but this was comically bad. I wish I could give negative stars.

I know what to do for now I’m learning my life is new everybody learn something so learning.

Their tone of voice was like they were mad, like they hated being there. They are the face of your company, the one I prefer for my moving and storage needs. I don't need pleasantries or even greetings; but, I don't need to feel like I'm a burden to you. I'm the customer! The paying customer. Based on this experience I'll never use U-Haul services in DC.

I needed to storage my stuff on the 27th of jul, so between go and get my stuff and come back, the store would be closed, so the least I would have expected as a some sort of compliment for a new customer would have been to wave the after hour charge for a day, no big deal it is just a thinking, and the to be obligated to buy some specific sort of padlock it is kind of absurd but anyways it is what it is other than that I rate your service average. Customer service? Excellent. Policies? Not very good for customers. My opinion.

I will not be renting a unit from uhaul in the future, nor would I recommend anyone to uhaul due to the uncompromising, all-or-nothing contract and refusal to prorate unused days.
