I wasn’t informed that the storage unit was on the second floor. Access to one of the units was significantly restricted to to it being in a very narrow corridor. This prohibited the full use of the space of that storage unit. We were unable to navigate the corridor and place furniture in the unit. We ended up having to rent a second unit. Multiple people were clearly living in units. The area reeked of stale cigarette smoke,astray and mold. The place literally look like a garbage dump.. The one older gentleman who was helping us at first was fantastic and honestly deserves more credit than he is given and he didn't give up on trying to help us like the younger guys. When we drove up there was a personell standing outside the location. The driver of the van pulled in next to him. I went over to speak to him. I commented that we didn't know what to do. (Meaning- did we have to bring paperwork and keys inside, or what. ) He said, "Just leave the keys on the seat and you are all set." So she did. We were about 15 minutes out when we got a phone call to be told that the keys that she had left also had her personal keys on the key ring. She had completely forgotten that she had attached the U-Haul key to her own keys so she wouldn't lose it. We went back to get them. We were very happy that they called as quickly as they did. Also- there were numerous U-Haul trucks lined up on the road. As a non-city driver- trying to get out of that yard was nerve-wracking for me because I couldn't see beyond them in either direction and wasn't sure if the road is a busy one or not.Kennith C.

Make it obvious that if you do after hour drop off and you leave the keys in a drop box, there is no way to complete the check out. U-Haul Portland was really polite this morning. They were extremely calm, relaxed and professional in removing one of the asylum-seekers who had miss used our facility here in Portland Maine. They even had to call the police to remove this person and remembered me when I returned the vehicle with a big smile and a big handshake. I've returned this very nice stop and go Chevy. The service was average at best. The man who helped check me in did not have a good attitude. He also seemed bothered that I asked to return a part of my trailer install (the hitch and ball) that I had done two days prior. I already had one and didn't know that the cost included a new one. He asked if I had the receipt. We will never ever be using Uhaul again. This company put us through the most stressful 72 hours, 6+ hours of driving to different Uhual locations, rude and inexperienced customer service reps, and policys that do nothing to help the customer. We wound up returning our trailer after 1 day to the the same location we picked it up from and Uhaul still had the audacity to charge us, after everything they put us through. Uhual is the definition of what is wrong with big business. They take advantage and try to get every penny out of the customer and they get away with this because they are the only company that provides cross-country trailer renters. Their employees are just a reflection of how poorly the company is run by the higher ups. Do yourself a favor in the long run and just buy a trailer because I can promise you the rental process from Uhaul is not worth the stress and money.wynn M.

My original rental of a 6x12 trailer on the UHaul site made two weeks before was lost or erased, despite the confirmation. We had a difficult time the day we came to get our trailer as they said they had no record. Eventually they were able to get a smaller trailer and we made do. The only issue I had was that I was charged for gas when I turned in the vehicle full. I was lucky to have taken a picture of my tank when I turned it in. I have rented multple times and this last time was specific about the truch, AT and Pads being prepared and in the truck. Again--this facility does NOT service as expected. I had to "load the pads". I had to "find the truck". I had to "find the AT". All in all--what should have been 10 mins pickup with the "pre-done" check - in took over 60mins--and THEY WERE NOT BUSY!!!!!! After flying into Boston and taking a bus to Portland, I was told the truck wouldn't be ready until 10:30am vice 7:00am. None of my equipment was in the truck and they completely forget the furniture pads I ordered. The truck was in need of a tune up as it ran very rough. I had reserved a vehicle for 8am - 12 and showed up at 7:45 am. I waited in line for an hour while the one person at the counter waited customers that spoke little English. When I finally checked out I was to it had to be back at noon, which only was a 3 hours. I questioned why the time didn't start when I checked out I was here early and it was my fault it took them so long to check me out and didn't get an answer. I asked to speak to the manager and he said he was, at the point I left and returned the vehicle after 3 hours and not completing my move. I would not recommend renting even with a reservation you may get less than you pay for and be in the position I was in and not finishing the move.Bill J.

Staff wasn't very helpful in taking the auto transport off and even offered to help me take the car down only if I have him $20. Our reservation for the storage unit done online wasn't showing up in the system and so we had to book again online while there. Arriving at the facility by car on Marginal Way and Just passing Cove St. I completely missed the entrance. Google maps had me come around the building go back up Co Street, I drove in the drive-up storage area and proceeded to find my way to customer parking. Upon reaching the front desk, Tristan explained that that was not in his normal position and tried to assist me the best he could. I told him I rented a locker online and needed to be shown where the locker was. He was not trained on the web self Storage. In hindsight he should have also asked me for my ID to verify who I was. I recall that I did get the code on the U-Haul app and sign up process and brought up the information on my phone. Tristan asked to see the code. He than showed me around the building to the indoor storage units. He showed me two keypads one to disarm my unit the other to enter the facility. He proceeded to answer all my questions with knowledge and was very helpful. Tristan explained that this location was temporary housing the vehicle repair as a new repair facility construction is ongoing. Otherwise, everything about the UHaul experience I disliked — from the antiquated and frustrating way I would get charged a late fee despite you having my credit card on file, to the multiple times I showed up and my unit was locked by you despite my bill being paid in full every month. (Again, you had my credit card that has never expired or stopped working.) Your front desk staff was so bad I was there crying last night at 7p trying to move my items into storage. She was confused, explained things incorrectly, and left out pertinent information like the loading bay closes at 5....not 10. I had to go back to the office a total of 5 times for various reasons because she was so so bad. She said the key card was activated, it was not, she lost my account and couldn't find me again somehow, she said there would be a lock in the unit and had me put away the one I was purchasing....there was no lock. Understaffed, and I called 3 times and waited on hold 20 minutes and when I got through was told I didn’t have a unit waiting even though I had confirmation and a reservation number from my online order. When I arrived I was given a unit that had a lock on it. The manager walked out to the unit with me and removed the uhaul lock. She was very helpful. We were told a storage unit was included with our truck rental. When we arrived no unit was reserved. We got that straightened out and then told we had to buy a round lock. We did. Then in the storage unit was a new round lock. So we moved our stuff in and went to get a refund on the purchased lock. We were told that the lock was necessary and no refund would be given. If we had gone to the storage unit first we would have had a free lock. After going round and round we asked for the manager who refunded our lock purchase. The practice of separate bills for each unit when I had two units led to double very high late fees. I went online and put the payment on auto, then received a few days later a letter telling me that if I put the payment on auto The late fees would be refunded. They were not refunded and I got another late fee the next month for one unit which is when I found out that each unit was charged separately.
