JOI WDanny was very helpful with allowing me to get my things and working with me. However, her employees were helpful but kind of inconvenienced me. Only because, I moved all of my things out and i wasn't aware that I would have to take the lock off and take a picture to show them that my unit was empty. So what end up happening was, I had to travel all the way back up there by bus to take the lock off and show them a picture that it was empty. That's the only part I did not like. Other than that it was nice. 🙂

ARIEL AWorst cashier that I ever encountered. She was barely understandable, not helpful at all and was clearly ignoring us for the most part. Took 10 min after giving us the key, to date show is which truck we were supposed to take. Aside that, the Condition of the truck was pretty poor, but it works fine

DARSTINE SI think her name was Jessica she really helped me. I was returning a truck and she noticed I was just standing there and she took care of every question and made sure my truck return was smooth.
MATTLYNN JI used the app, but the vehicle that I was scheduled to use was blocked in by other trucks and there was no key in the key box when I opened it. This meant that I had to wait until the place opened at 9am. I wanted to get started at 830. The staff were very helpful and friendly- gave me a new vehicle quickly. App info needs to be fully followed up upon by the previous days staff.
Gary CTook over an hour to get our U-Haul due to the only one left being broken. We had to get an in-town trailer for a cross-country move, which made it difficult due to the 55mph speed limit. When we received the trailer, it was very dirty and covered in pieces of broken ceramics. The man who installed it did not wrap the chain around properly, so it fell off on the highway. When dropping the trailer back off, the U-Haul employee said it was improperly attached and that he was surprised that it didn't fall off on the highway. Additionally, I was charged an extra $35 for a "late drop off" when I reserved the U-Haul for 3 days and actually dropped it off a day early.
KIMBERLY VThe dodge ram cargo van is a piece of junk. I couldn't charge my phone even after buying a new charger. Give me the older Chevy Express cargo van anytime. The ram is too new and uncomfortable and a piece of junk.

SHIRISH SI am generally an optimistic person, so others may have rated this below average. The front desk had a number of issues trying to find me a rental - from system errors, to trucks out of gas or snowed in, it took a while to find a truck that would suit my needs. Appreciate the desk staff's perseverance - was not his fault! As for the truck we did receive, it smelled like someone recently smoked in there and there was an old sticky coffee spill running down the cup holder. Otherwise, I still choose UHAUL for the convenience.

LADONNA DLights on the dashboard was on and when I returned and requested for a different vehicle, the next vehicle was worse and it was not the vehicle I requested to rent, but by this time this process and wasted approximately 30 of my time. When I returned the vehicle ans brought it to their attention, there was no concern or follow up. The truck beeped all the way back, several lights were on and it road rough as it was going to shut off.
TAMIKA LThe staff & the management make it happen for you!! I recently housed my daughter & 4 grand kids stuff there.....and trust the situation & me being caught off guard was a mess. The folks at the Midtown Detroit U-Haul are angels from heaven!!! It was a 97* day when we moved into the storage and a 10* day 5 months later when we moved out and the staff helped above and beyond on both days. I will def be using this location again. It's not often when you can say I really liked spending my money with any businesses these days! I liked spending my money here. They are human beings and recognize their clients as such to. An amazing thing considering most businesses today see us as dollars signs and identification numbers

You walk up to the the counter and they continue what they're doing without even acknowledging you. Then after I said good morning, she said I'm not open and looked away. That's just one thing I didn't like. Secondly, I reported a problem with the glass entry door not locking and latching TWICE! The first time on Friday 1/24 or Saturday 1/25 I called and reported the problem. The guy that said 'oh yeah, ok, I'll put some spray on it. When I came back on Sunday (moving) and Monday (to exit contract) the door still was not locking/latching. As I was waiting , I asked for the manager ( you Jordan), but someone else was sent. I reported the problem again, but I don't know if she cared either. As a customer we pay PREMIUM rates for 'secure' storage there, but your team is NOT on board with that concept The moto is 'if you see something, say something ', but in the case of your staff it appears to fall on deaf ears. As a professional customer service executive, I think your team needs significant training in customer service and etiquette. I pray that they are not following a bad example set by their leadership. ALPHONZO HI've dealt with this location for years for years and they've always treated me well. In that light I hate to quibble, but there was no windshield washer fluid in the reservoir so that I had to buy a gallon for it. Something that irritated me which I'm sure isn't their fault, though: I hated having to take pictures myself to show the van was in acceptable condition before I left the lot. I don't think that's my job. But I also assume it's Uhaul corporate and not on these great folks. I would like that policy cahnged.

EUGENE LWorst experience of my life -10/100. The truck had a dead battery. Threw my move off by 3 days and still had the nerve to charge me for the miles I drove. The level of thievery I experienced is mind boggling.

Ciera BTo have such a huge amount of storage space and so little room for customers to load and unload belongings is unacceptable. I realize that nothing can be done about it as there are only so many loading bays/docks, but it's worth a mention. Also, the customer service has really gone down. I have had a storage unit here for a little over 10 years and I have seen good management and quality workers come and go. The best was Clarence, who was the manager when I moved in. There was also a guy named Eddie who was just a really great person. Clarence, and all the people who worked with him were friendly, caring and understood customer service. Everyone who works there now just seems to be a warm body taking up space. Not much in the way of friendliness - just there to do a job. Additionally, the parking (or in this case, the lack thereof) has gotten bad. I realize it's because the trucks that used to be parked across the street can no longer be parked there because of the new building. Having said that, the parking situation is really inferior, especially, again, for such a large facility. Overall, over the years, the only thing that has changed for the better is that they got the elevator situation upgraded. No, I would not recommend this location to anyone I know, but only because I've been there so long, and I know how much better it can be. Thanks for taking the time to read all this.

ANTHONY PThe truck had not been properly checked in since the previous one-way rental and/or had been used for a local rental between, resulting in a 16-mile, 1/8 tank discrepancy on the outgoing contract. Correcting this effectively deleted the truck from my UHaul ap, complicating the return in Virginia. Also, the engine light was on, attributed by the local rep to "an aftermarket catalytic converter." I subsequently discovered that the gas cap had no rubber gasket - a likely explanation for the engine light AND terrible gas mileage. Additionally, the left windshield wiper was worn and loose in its frame, resulting in constant scraping and scratching of the windshield.

Christopher BI was given a truck that broke down, and also told that having no catalytic converter was policy and safe. After being stranded on the side of the highway for 6 hours, I was finally able to get a replacement truck and still got charged for all my troubles and losing the days I rented the truck for and the full tank of gas I put in it. I’m hoping to hear back about a refund. Thankfully the uhaul support team members (the only ones name I remember was Christopher from the road side assistance team) I talked to over the phone back and forth all day were incredibly helpful and kind and saved the experience for me. But after all of my troubles we were still treated very poorly from the team at the uhaul location and it seemed they were trying to make us think it was our fault and that we had no right to complain.

There was routinely only 1 person working the counter, and they worked SLOWLY. Each transaction took 30 or so minutes and the staff seemed disinterested, even bored. I hated having to deal with any of them. I have now emptied my unit and, if I ever need to store anything again or to buy moving boxes, I am going somewhere else.

I waited in line for half an hour only to discover I didn't need to wait in line to check in & offer my proof of renters insurance. The man directed me to let myself in which was basically down the block. The place is pretty massive. (I have MS so trekking the mini obstacle course from the showroom/office to the entrance of the storage facility is challenging for someone like me on a good day & in part why I did this a week ahead of time.) I get to the door & it tells me to check in. Another client told me I had to check in at the office first, so schlepp back & I need to check in first & that I don't have a pin. So back to the office. He tells me the two places I could have done that--would have helped had he told me that in the first place. So again I head back to access my reserved unit but this time found it was zip-tied shut & I still couldn't access it & it looked too small from the outside. So, again I headed back to the office. Another customer tells me on the way they have models in the showroom! It would have helped knowing that one of the first two times I'd been in there earlier. So, I head back & tell another guy I can't access the unit reserved for me because of the zip-tie. He tells me to just yank it off--as if I could do that by hand or without scissors. I told him it looks small & I understand you have models? He looked up my order & said I'd get the 10x10... I corrected him & told him I reserved the 10x10x5 & that it was going to be way too small, I'm gonna need the larger one for sure. He then tells me there AREN'T any available! I had been there almost an hour and a half at this point! I hadn't moved a single thing yet and was exhausted just trying to check in! It sucked! Honestly, the place looks great, great location, but all that back and forth and what I pre-paid for (when I'm supposed to get the first month FREE & a lock!) left me underserved, frustrated and considering cancelling the whole thing. I'm left with either having to reserve TWO more units for $120 a month each, totaling $375 a month, which DOESN'T help me. Frankly, this is largely why moving is a major pain! Isn't that the business you guys are in? Can you be just a little more helpful, please? A little communication could have saved me a lot of stress.

I had to park behind another car just to go close out my account. And backing your car into their dock is a nightmare. A U-haul truck almost backs into my car at this dock. The parking lot is always full, trucks everywhere, trailers sticking out making it hard to back of the lot (there is no way to turn around.) So dangerous!!!

I tried the app six times and an “error” kept occurring not slowing me to submit it. I called and they said they didn’t know what to do but rest assured I would have a unit when I showed up. When I did show up the lock showed up as a charge. He tried to give me an old lock first. And the entire transaction took entirely too long because the Store Manager was answering customer calls and handling associate issues while he was helping me. Then he didn’t explain how to use the elevators and we had to go all the way back inside to ask. Really frustrating when you are in the middle of a move, tired, and still looking at a 4-hr drive after.

Katherine B | First ImpressionsAlthough the facility itself was pleasant, the wait time was ridiculous! Twice I was there w-a-i-t-I-n-g for roughly 1 1/2 hrs just to be waited on. My initial contract had so many mistakes and with the amount of time it took to resolve them, the manager graciously gave me the first month rent for free. There was also some frustration with the whole key card access to the elevator. Having to often go back outside to re-swipe and the call button not working. In addition, I was told I could make my monthly payment via the app. The app wasn't working, which resulted in a late fee, the inconvenience of having to go in and pay it. Then to go to the storage only to find the double lock still on it and having to go back to the office. It simply became frustrating. I am thankful for the Mgr and Ms. Dani (both at New Center, Detroit) who took the time to rectify my initial contract and to correct the wrong additional fee(s) made to the charge to my credit card. I am thankful that my time there is done as I didn't want to continue and it all remain stressful. Again, thxful for those who did help!

I will never recommend or use any UHaul services anymore. Very disappointed as I've used UHaul in the past from time to time and used to be content with the services until now. Service here is downright deplorable.
NINA B | First ImpressionsAlthough I completed the online process, it was interrupted by an incompetent General Manager and his staff. I was set to move my belongings into the unit on January 15, 2024. Upon arrival, my code did not work and my access was denied. My moving helpers were paid by the hour and after several unsuccessful attempts, I went inside the store. The General Manager was present and assisted. He reviews my account only to discover that "a maintenance staff person" had cleared out by unit after I completed the online process on January 13, 2024, which include electronically signing a contract and paying the first month's rent. The General Manager then proceeds to ask for my emergency contact again so that he could reverse was apparently done. It's funny, I never received a move out communication after this so-called clear out had been completed. This is not my first encounter dealing with the incompetence by the General Manager. In December 2022, I moved out of an apartment and had store my apartment in a U-Box for a couple weeks until my apartment was ready. I was preparing to travel for the Christmas holidays and wanted to store a few items ahead of my travel. Upon arrival at the facility, I learn that my U-Box could not be located. It took nearly two hours to discover that they left my U-Box outside and by the date it was arctic weather, so my lock was frozen. It had to be cut open. These idiots left my U-Box in the elements for several weeks. I figured out that they it outside where I packed it. In the over 20 years of dealing with U-Haul in several states from Georgia, Washington, DC, and Maryland--I have never experienced such incompetence. And while they are willing to offer a free month and an apology, it just doesn't make up for the failure to do business in the manner that is U-Haul should be operating. I don't believe for one minute that a maintenance staff made that sort of error with a legal contract. Not one minute. The General Manager is simply in over his head. It is clear that he does not know how to operate this facility. The unfortunate circumstance is that Detroit city proper doesn't have the level of nationally known businesses in the city. This facility is one of two in the city proper. Detroit proper could use some good ole competition in the storage facility marketplace. I would love to see national brands such as Public Storage, Extra Space Storage and Cube Smart enter the Detroit city proper market (not the metro because those brands have locations in the suburbs). Detroit city has the infrastructure and the growing population for their to be fair competition and better offerings.

When rented the truck earlier in the day, I twice asked for clarification, and the U-Haul employee insisted that it would be clear via text… but then I still had questions later when moving in with no one there to help. The double scan in system was very confusing the first time, and I watched 2 other people struggle with it while I was there. An alarm was going off in the main floor elevator bay the entire time I was there. There was a container of rat poison and a small amount of dirty water in my unit when first opened + trash on the floor in the hallway. I felt super misled by a promotion where I thought I was getting my first month’s storage fee waved because I’d booked a truck, but come to find out that the deal didn’t apply to my use case… but they was a main reason why I’d chosen U-haul in the first place. Also had a terrible experience with the self trick return process. Came out exhausted and deeply disappointed with U-haul

I went into the office area at the facility to ask a question, and the person working just told me to do things on the app, while he was helping other customers. I said I could wait my turn because the app wasn’t working, and he continued to mumble things that I couldn’t hear. I asked him to speak up, and he sighed and continued his stream of mumbling. I walked out and asked the parking lot attendant for help, and he was as helpful as he could be for not knowing the full answers to my questions. I asked another employee for help, and he sighed and rolled his eyes before answering. When he did answer, he said it in a way that implied I’m just supposed to know these things. I understand the first of the month is exceptionally busy and you’re probably short staffed, but when your staff that are there aren’t interested in answering questions and tell me to use the broken app, it’s incredibly frustrating.

If this is a representative of U-HAUL, I would use another company, such as PENSKI.

The staff was nice so no complaints there. If the elevator wasn't so old it would be a 5 for me, but it's old and unreliable so I would not recommend in case anyone needs to access their unit, you may be out of luck. Those stairs to the 6th and 7th floors are horrible.

Prior to the management changing, I would have said no to at least questions 1, 3, 4, 6. Prior, I was annoyed with Uhaul. For every couple of months, I kept receiving notices of an increase in storage unit fees. Until, I demanded to see my contract with the verbage justifying this reason. However, the last couple months I noticed after the change in management, I never received another notice. Also, I noticed the access to the building and security was upgraded. This was good. On the contrary, it would have been nice to have at least 24 hr. access, considering I had two units at the same time, in addition to a Ubox. If there is anything Uhaul can improve on, is offering discounts and benefits to customers who have multiple products/accounts, including time invested in services. I had three types of storages and rented all the vehicles within a 3-6 months spand. A little more TLC to your faithful customers is suggested. Also, when services or products are not avaliable, offering alternatives to accommodate customers is an area of need. Regardless if the facility is an independent franchise, it is still Uhaul. I experienced a few occasions a vehicle was not available. Or when I was inquiring about storages, there was no assistance in locating another facility when none were available. I had to leave the counter and go look for another. I ended up waiting until one came available. Getting a little more assistance with finding an available location or being referred to the general number was better than just being turned away. Last, it was great having consistent employees present. There were 3 men, who were my "go to" for assistance. They were the face of Baltimore-Detroit location. Otherwise, my experience overall not bad at all!

When I did see the space there was a huge rat trap inside which caused concern so I asked did they have rats in the place. I was told no but the traps are placed there as a preventative measure. I came 2 days later to move items inside only to be confronted by a huge RAT not mouse. I called to ask about refunding my money since I never occupied the space & was told no & was moved out of the system on 8/31/22. I’ve rented many trucks from this UHaul & have always had a great experience with the staff & facility until this. I’ll continue to rent trucks from them but NEVER a storage unit from this place.

I asked for 5×7 unit but when measured with a measuring tape it was a whole 2 feet off. It was a 5×5. The prices were much higher than the quotes online and the storage until prices were raised a month into using it. Very unhappy with my service will not use again.

All of my belongings have a thick layer of concrete dust and pebbles from construction contractors jackhammering through a brick wall. There were constant false alarms going off that were nerve-wrecking. I believe a 20 percent late fee is exorbitant. Finally, when renting a truck on move out day, the counter associate sat there eating Flaming Hot Cheetos while checking me out—red powder on hands, moving slowly, no sense of purpose, no eye contact. It was very poor customer service experience.

Thank you to Clarence Vincent & RT Williams , manager supervisors, for helping me get my goods out of storage I feel I should get at least a month fee back for sitting in traffic three times wasting fuel and having to leave and not able to get my belongings . Don’t store your items here until there is a manager that actually does his jobs and can train their personnel appropriately to help customers

Also: my space has a window which is crumbling from water damage along the lower sill. I am hoping to use my space to store books; if the water damage is ongoing this will quickly become unacceptable. Finally: the restroom area on my floor smells excessively of mold. Not the restroom itself, but the floor in the restroom alcove. It's disgusting.

So I had 3 units in total costing me $149 a month (which increased EVERY FEW MONTHS) in total. I emptied 2 units which only left one but was told because I left a few items in them, I would be charged the full price until I went back and emptied them completely. I returned to do that but found that one of the units had another person renting it. I was told they would remain empty/ unoccupied until I returned and "it was not their policy to empty units out". Obviously, this wasn't true. I was still charged the full price for three units for months, instead of just one unit which I wanted to keep. The manager was over this and kept the charges. This place is NOT RECOMMENDED by me even though they are the cheapest priced storage place around.

People We're getting on the elevator trying to go down as we were trying to go up. Confusion and chaos. I even twice had to make people get off of the elevator so that I could continue to my floor. This was very stressful and almost became physical. Upon a person's reservation you guys should explain the whole process so that no one is surprised by anything that may happen. I will not and do not recommend your facility to anyone. And as a matter of fact I will never use this Facility again!!! Now that I have had that experience, the next time I Need a storage unit I will definitely purchase a ground unit. Get it together u-haul!!!

When I came back downstairs the first young woman that helped me met me in the lobby to give me an updated copy of my contract which showed the reversal of unit 7045 and the addition of unit 7041. Great problem solving skills and attentive to me to not make me wait in line again to get my updated contract. Awesome. The facility was spotless and all of the security cameras and monitors, card swiping etc make me feel very confident that my belonging are secure.

I never came to my storage because of fear of getting stuck. The facility itself is nice. The customers are always parked in the wrong area for loading where the uhaul trucks need to go. You have no way of asking them to move if they are upstairs. The staff always gets an attitude when you have an issue with the elevator and move really slow if you or people get stuck. It’s never fully staffed. It’s always one -two staff members. Wait time is always 20-40 mins. Imagine just being stuck and can’t use the stairs! Do better.

In my case i needed it while my house was being worked on when i got the unit i figured two months. i was approaching the fifth month and could not see me paying 114.00 a month because the house project had been put on hold because of the virus. I said all this to say the cost of storage should not cost over a hundred dollars for any unit Had the price been more cost affective i would of keep the unit longer . The company should consider long time storage should have a lower cost .

My moving guys reported a less-than-stellar move-in experience. The man driving the truck had to wait 45 minutes for someone to move a car out of the driveway in, and said he couldn't get in without it being moved. He had to wait 15-20 minutes for people to come up and down on the elevators to get them in and out of the units too. Perhaps you need more staff during this really busy time.
