Building History

You may know them best for their iconic slogan, “What would you do for a Klondike Bar?”. Isaly’s, the purveyors of fresh deli meats and fine cheeses and the creators of the Original Klondike Bar, was founded in 1902 as the Mansfield Pure Milk Company by William E. Isaly. Under his direction the company expanded throughout Ohio to Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

In order to meet a growing demand, the Isaly family commissioned the expansion of small factory in Youngstown, Ohio. They hired architects Charles F. Owsley to design the exterior and Clyde “Shooey” Schuemacher to design the interior. The result was an Art Deco and Art Modern-styled factory that featured tan and green terra cotta and a central glass block tower that was lit with fluorescent tubes. The interior boasted a dairy themed mural in the lobby, an auditorium, offices for the Isaly family, and a penthouse apartment.

In 1969, factory production was moved to Pittsburgh to improve efficiency. The once bustling factory was acquired by U-Haul in 1987. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
