My experience with U-Haul was extremely frustrating, and I believe there are several areas that need significant improvement. First, I recommend doing a much better job of notifying customers when their pickup location has changed from the one they originally reserved. My day began with me taking a Lyft to the location where I had booked my truck for a 9:00 a.m. pickup, only to be told that my reservation had been moved to another location. I had not been made aware of this change. To make matters worse, the new location didn't even open until 10:00 a.m., while the original location had no trucks available because they were all reserved. I rated the pickup location a 1 because the first truck I was provided was clearly not in reliable condition. It hesitated to start when I initially got in, but I didn't think much of it at the time. After driving about 15 minutes home, the truck would not start at all. The most frustrating part of my experience was the roadside assistance process. The roadside assistance feature in the U-Haul app repeatedly gave me error messages and would not allow me to submit a request. Calling customer service wasn't much better. I waited on hold for approximately 15 minutes during my first call before the call was disconnected. When I called back, I waited another 20 minutes before finally reaching someone. A service provider was dispatched, but it took another two and a half hours to arrive, only to jump-start the truck. I do want to recognize the professionalism of the local U-Haul team. They were courteous and responsive, and they found another truck for me to use. However, I then had to drive the disabled truck back to the location, another 15-minute trip. The replacement truck was much newer and in significantly better condition, which left me wondering why I wasn't given that truck in the first place. Because of these issues, what should have been a 9:00 a.m. start to my moving day didn't actually begin until around 2:00 p.m. In addition, I had already put fuel in the original truck before it broke down and then had to purchase additional fuel for the replacement truck. The local operator explained they were unable to make fuel or time adjustments in the system, which is not customer-friendly for either the customer or the local U-Haul staff. Overall, this experience caused unnecessary delays, additional transportation costs, lost time, and considerable stress on an already demanding moving day. I would appreciate hearing from U-Haul regarding a fair resolution to this situation, whether through a refund, credit, or another appropriate form of compensation. More importantly, I hope U-Haul reviews its communication process for reservation changes, vehicle maintenance procedures, and roadside assistance response times so that future customers do not experience the same issues.
