My first experience using U-Haul’s mobile pickup was extremely frustrating and will likely be my last. After arriving, I spent over 60 minutes in 115-degree heat trying to access my assigned truck. The instructions in the app were unclear, making it difficult to identify the correct code and lock location. When I called customer service, I waited about 10 minutes before reaching a representative who tried to help me access the truck. Unfortunately, the lock mounted on the back of the truck was exposed to direct sunlight and became so hot that I had to use a reusable shopping bag from my car as a makeshift oven mitt just to handle it. Even then, the lock was extremely difficult to turn and would not open. After additional troubleshooting, I was transferred to the mobile pickup department and then waited another 30 minutes on hold before receiving assistance. The representative ultimately reassigned me to another truck and guided me through retrieving the key from a U-Haul lockbox. The lockbox process was far easier and more intuitive than the lock attached to the truck. I would strongly encourage U-Haul to standardize mobile pickup using designated lockboxes rather than truck-mounted locks. It would be clearer, more convenient, and much safer for customers, especially in extreme weather conditions. The replacement truck was also somewhat dirty inside and out, but that was minor compared to the challenges of simply accessing a vehicle. What should have been a quick and convenient pickup turned into a nearly 90-minute ordeal until I could drive-away. Improving the app instructions, simplifying key retrieval, and reducing customer service wait times would greatly enhance the mobile pickup experience.
