I didn't receive any kind of instructions on what I had to do when I picked up the truck before the location opened, just that I could use the app to unlock the truck. When I arrived, I clicked Pick up and then went through the steps of scanning my ID and then I was prompted to enter 2 references, and that I had to wait to be verified and that UHaul would be calling my references. There were also tabs that said "employment/passport" etc. I was not told about any extensive background check to pick up a UHaul rental. I've had an account for years and years. I also had movers waiting for me. I used the chat feature to ask what was happening and then apparently I was cleared. The instructions to obtain the key were clear; however, the lock itself was stuck and we had to wrestle with it to get it open. The location itself had a lot of junk about that didn't feel quite safe. Other than the initial stress, it was a good rental and I appreciated having a location so close to my home.
