How to Pack Electronics for Shipping with Collegeboxes
In today’s day and age, moving to college means moving a host of electronics along with the usual dorm room essentials and school supplies. This might include a flat screen TV, desktop computer, video game console and more. Because these items are often both fragile and valuable, returning college students should take extra precaution during the packing process.
What’s more, many electronics are too difficult to take with you when you fly or drive to campus due to their size. That’s where shipping to school comes in. When you ship to school with a service like Collegeboxes, your items are shipped to your dorm prior to college move in day. Then all you have to do is pack some boxes and bring essentials when you travel to campus.
To help with your college moving experience, here is how to pack your electronics for shipping using tips and recommendations from the packing professionals at Collegeboxes.
Recommended packing supplies
Before you start packing, first acquire the recommended packing supplies. If you’ve already signed up for Collegeboxes, your Supply Kit will have most of the necessary supplies. But for valuable electronics, you may want to consider gathering additional supplies, like those listed here
- Enviro-Bubble®
- Packing Peanuts
- Small or Medium Electronics Boxes (if needed)
- Flat Panel TV Kit (if needed)
1. Prep your electronics for packing
Before you unplug anything, consider taking a photo of how your electronics are set up. This will help you reassemble elaborate computer and television set ups later. Also consider giving your electronics a quick dusting; you’ll be happy to assemble clean, dust-free items later.
2. Dissemble your electronics
Start by removing and organizing the small pieces such as cords, chargers, discs, stands and ink cartridges. With cords, neatly coil and bundle them using tape or zip-ties. You can place the bundles in a plastic bag to stay organized. Other items like stands and chargers can be packed in the box later.
3. Use the box-in-box method
The best way to pack electronics is with the “box-in-box method,” where you pack your electronics in their original packaging, then place that box in a larger, sturdier moving box. Keep in mind that this won’t work for certain items, like large computer monitors or TVs, so you will need a separate moving box for those (like the Flat Panel TV Kit, for example).
If you don’t have the original packaging, you can still use the box-in-box method. Instead of original packaging, use a box that closely resembles the size of the product you’re packing. Wrap the product in Enviro-Bubble or fill the empty space with packing peanuts to provide padding and minimize shifting.
4. Pack your electronics
With your electronics neatly packed in their original packaging or a similar-sized box, you can now place them inside the larger moving box. A Collegebox is ideal for this packing strategy, as the 24"x16"x18" dimensions provide about four cubic feet of space for your belongings.
Follow these packing tips to get your items packed safely and securely:
- Line the large box with about 2” of Enviro-Bubble, a towel or a similar soft item
- Wrap the small box in about 2” of bubble wrap; secure with tape
- Place the small box in the center of the large box
- Place other items, like towels or pillows, in the empty space to keep the small box from shifting
- Seal the large box shut with tape when you are finished packing
5. Ship your boxes with Collegeboxes
With your items packed, you can start planning for college move in day. The good news is, the hard part is over – simply schedule a pickup and delivery date and Collegeboxes will do the rest. Ship-To-School is the best way to ship boxes to college. Visit collegeboxes.com today to sign up.
