How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a BMW I4

2022-2024 BMW i4 Hitch Installation Steps
1. Remove Underbody Panels
The first step in our hitch installation process will be to remove the underbody panel from the vehicle. The large panel is held in place by sixteen bolts which we will use our 10mm socket to remove. Following this we will remove two more underbody panels, each located behind the wheel on both sides of the vehicle. These panels can be detached by removing their six 10mm fasteners.
2. Remove Factory Nuts
Our next step will be to remove two factory nuts from the vehicle’s rear bumper beam. For the top nut, we will need our swivel with the 18mm socket. The second nut will not require the swivel.
3. Install Side Plates
We are now ready to install the side plates on the rear bumper beam. The two previously removed factory nuts and the T60 torx bit will be re-installed into these side plates.
4. Raise Hitch Into Place
With the side plates installed, we can now raise the hitch to its proper position on the vehicle's frame.
5. Install the Provided Hardware
The hardware kit for the hitch installation will include six half-inch bolts with flat washers and lock washers for each bolt. Three bolts will be installed on each side of the vehicle's frame.
6. Tighten and Torque
With the hardware installed, we will tighten and torque the hitch to the manufacturer's specifications to properly secure it to the vehicle.
7. Trim Underbody Panel
Next, we are going to trim a section into the large underbody panel to allow room for the hitch's receiver. We will be using our air saw to make these trims.
8. Re-Install Under Body Panels
For our final step, we will re-install the previously removed underbody panels.
You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your i4.
