GMC Canyon Hitch Installation Steps

1. Remove Bumper Wiring

To start our hitch installation process we will need to prep the underbody of the vehicle for the addition of the hitch. In this case, we need to remove the rear bumper support which will be replaced by the hitch. To begin, we will remove the attached wiring to this cross member.

2. Remove Spare Tire Bucket

Right next to the spare tire and attached to the bumper support is a bracket that will need to be removed. The bolts attaching it can be removed with a 13mm socket.

3. Remove Rear Bumper and Rear Bumper Beam

Our next step will be to remove the rear bumper and bumper beam. To start this step we will need to loosen the factory bolts that are attaching it to the vehicle’s frame. Once these bolts are loose, we will remove the two bolts on each side to remove the bumper. Following this, we can detach the remaining bolts to remove the bumper beam which will not be re-installed.

4. Raise Hitch Into Position

With the underbody of the vehicle now prepped, we can begin raising the hitch into position. Be sure to align the hitch with the proper attachment points of the vehicle.

5. Install Provided Hardware

After the hitch is in position, we will attach it to the frame by installing the provided hardware. We will be installing new bolts that come with a flat washer and a lock washer.

5. Re-Install Rear Bumper

With all of our bolts in place and the bumper re-installed, we will now be tightening and torquing the hitch to the manufacturer’s specifications. For the two side bolts, we will be using a 21mm socket and for the two bottom bolts, we will be using a 22mm socket.

You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your GMC Canyon.
