Honda Accord Hitch Installation Steps

1. Lower Exhaust

Our first step in the hitch installation process will be to lower the exhaust, which we will do by removing five rubber hangars. There are two located on the driver’s side, two located on the passenger side, and another located in the middle of the vehicle’s frame. Before we remove these hangers to lower the exhaust, we will be securing it with a support strap to ensure it doesn’t completely fall.

2. Remove Muffler

With the exhaust lowered, we are now going to remove the muffler located on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Its two bolts can be removed with a 14mm socket.

3. Trim Heat Shield

Now that we have the muffler removed, we have better access to the heat shield which we will need to remove a bolt from and then trim. The bolt which needs to be removed is located nearest the vehicle’s exterior and can be done with a 10mm socket.

With the bolt removed, we are going to measure five inches from the edge of the heat shield and mark where our trim needs to occur. Using our hole saw we will be making an access point that will align with the hole in the frame for installing the hitch. Repeat this process on each side of the vehicle.

4. Raise Hitch Into Position

With the underbody of the vehicle prepped, we can now raise our hitch into position for it to be installed on the vehicle. As we raise the hitch into position, we will mark where it aligns on the frame so we can create additional access points with our power drill and step bit.

5. Install Provided Hardware

Following the hitch being raised into place, we can now install our provided hardware. Two bolts will need to be installed on each side. The shorter bolt will need to be installed on the heat shield, and the longer bolt will be installed on the access point of the frame.

6. Tighten and Torque Hitch

With our bolts installed and our hitch in place, we can now remove the fish wire and attach our flange nuts. Following this, we will tighten and torque the hitch according to the manufacturer’s specifications - properly securing it to the vehicle’s frame.

7. Re-Install Muffler and Exhaust

To wrap up our hitch installation process, we will be re-install the muffler and exhaust we removed in our earlier steps.

You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your Honda Accord.
