Tools Needed:

  • Safety Glasses
  • Flathead Screwdriver
  • Phillips Head Screwdriver
  • Power Drill
  • Torque Wrench
  • Utility Knife
  • Exhaust Strap
  • 1 1/8 “ Hole Saw
  • 19mm & 13mm Sockets

Jeep Renegade Hitch Installation Steps

1. Remove Underbody Panels

To begin the hitch installation process, we will need to remove an underbody panel located on each side of the vehicle’s rear. This underbody panel features two plastic screws which can be removed with a phillips head screwdriver. Repeat this process on both sides of the vehicle.

2. Remove Frame Plugs

Our next step will be removing the three plugs on the vehicle’s frame. These rubber frame plugs can be detached using a flathead screwdriver.

3. Drill Access Holes

After removing the frame plugs, we will need to create two access holes - one on each side of the vehicle. We will be using a 1 1/8” drill saw to create these access points.

4. Lower Exhaust

To make room for the addition of the hitch, we will need to lower the vehicle’s exhaust. Before detaching the exhaust, we will be installing a supporting strap so it doesn’t fall completely away from the vehicle. Once the strap is in place, the bolts attaching the exhaust can be removed with a 13mm socket.

5. Install Hardware

We can now install the provided hardware which will attach the trailer hitch to the vehicle’s frame. We will use fish wire to feed our hardware into the appropriate attachment points.

6. Raise Hitch Into Place

With the hardware now installed, we can begin to raise the hitch into its proper position. While aligning the hitch, be sure to run the fish wire from the hardware through the corresponding attachments on the hitch to bring the bolts through.

7. Tighten and Torque Hardware

After properly aligning the hitch, we can secure the hardware by adding the conical tooth washers and hex nuts. Once these are in place we will need to tighten and torque all the hardware to the manufacturer’s specifications.

8. Re-install Exhaust and Underbody Panels

With the hitch now firmly in place, our final step is to re-install the exhaust and underbody panels which we previously removed.

You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your Jeep Renegade.
