Mazda CX-9 Hitch Installation Steps

1. Remove Underbody Panel

To begin the hitch installation process, we will need to prep the vehicle’s underbody for the addition of the hitch. To start we will need to remove the lower underbody fascia. This panel is held in by four push pins which can be detached with a flathead screwdriver. After this panel is removed, there is a bracket behind it on each side of the vehicle that needs to be removed as well.

2. Lower Exhaust

Our next step will be to lower the exhaust to allow room for the hitch to fit into place. The exhaust is held in by four rubber hangers which will need to be detached. Before we do this, we will need to use straps to prevent the exhaust from falling.

3. Install Provided Hardware

We will now be installing our provided hardware to the proper attachment points. To install these bolts we will be using the fish wire technique to feed the hardware through each access hole.

4. Raise Hitch into Position

With our hardware in place, we can now raise the hitch into position. We will line up the hitch to the attachment points and feed the fish wire through each corresponding hole, pulling the bolts to the hitch. After this, we can remove the fish wire and install our washer and nut to each bolt.

5. Tighten and Torque

With the hitch in place, we will tighten and torque it according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

6. Re-Install Exhaust

Now that the hitch is installed, we can re-install the exhaust which was removed. For this, we can simply re-attach each exhaust hanger and remove the supporting straps.

You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your Mazda CX-9.
