Tesla Model S Hitch Installation Steps
1. Remove Rear Bumper
Prior to installation, we will need to prep the vehicle for the addition of the hitch. To begin this process we will need to remove the two rear-most underbody panels, followed by removing the rear bumper. These items will feature push pins that can be removed with a flathead and bolts which can be removed with a 10mm socket.
2. Remove Rear Bumper Beam
After the rear bumper is removed, the bumper beam will need to be removed as well. The bumper beam is held in by eight nuts, two on the top and bottom on each side. These nuts can be removed with a 15mm socket.
3. Raise Hitch into Place
With the rear bumper and its bumper beam removed, we can now begin installing the hitch. To start this, we will need to install the provided nylon fender washers to the appropriate attachment points. The hitch can now be raised into its proper position.
4. Install Provided Hardware
Now that we have the trailer hitch in place, we can now install the provided hardware. There should be eight flange nuts to be installed.
5. Tighten and Torque Hitch
With the provided hardware properly installed, we will need to tighten and torque them according to the manufacturer’s specifications. This process can be done with the 15mm socket also.
6. Re-install Rear Bumper Beam
Now that the hitch is installed, we can re-install rear bumper beam. Directly following this we will need to install the frame plate strap. This will assist the hitch by allowing it to be more stabilized. The nuts used to install the frame plate strap can be tightened with the 17mm and 14mm sockets.
7. Trim Rear Bumper Panel
Before we can re-install the rear bumper, we will need to trim the bottom of the bumper panel to allow room for the hitch to fit into place. Following the instructions, we will mark off the needed area for the trim, and then complete this process with our saw - though any proper cutting tool can be used here.
8. Re-install the Removed Rear Bumper
With the rear-most underbody panel properly trimmed, we can now re-install the removed rear bumper to complete the trailer hitch installation.
You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your Tesla Model S.
