Volkswagen Tiguan Hitch Installation Steps
1. Lower the Exhaust
The first step in our hitch installation process will be lowering the vehicle’s exhaust. To do this, we will need to remove a 13 mm bolt from each side of the exhaust. But prior to that, we will be installing our exhaust strap to support the exhaust and prevent it from falling completely.
2. Remove Factory Hardware
Next, we will be removing two factory bolts from each side of the vehicle’s frame rail. We will be using a 16mm socket to remove these bolts. If your vehicle does not have these bolts you can skip this step.
3. Raise Hitch Into Position
With the underbody of our vehicle now prepped, we can begin raising our hitch into place. The hitch should line up directly with the access holes where we removed the factory bolts in the last step.
4. Install Hardware
Now that our hitch is in place, we can re-install the factory hardware to secure the hitch to the vehicle’s frame. If your vehicle did not have these factory bolts, you can use the fish wire technique to install the provided hardware.
5. Tighten and Torque Hitch
We will be using our 16mm socket to tighten our hardware to properly secure the trailer hitch to the vehicle’s frame. Tighten and torque the hitch down according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
6. Reinstall the Exhaust
Our last step will be to reinstall the previously lowered exhaust. Both of its 13mm bolts can be re-installed with a cordless drive for ease. Following this, the exhaust strap can be removed.
