What Insurance Options Are Available for U-Haul Truck Rentals?
Last Updated:
If you’re renting a U-Haul moving truck or cargo van, you can choose optional protection plans at checkout. The main options are Safemove® and Safemove Plus®. These options are important to consider because if you decline coverage, you’re financially responsible for damage to the rental equipment.
What Insurance Options Are Available for U-Haul Truck Rentals?
When you rent a truck from U-Haul, you have optional coverage add-ons available for your rental. These are designed to protect your equipment, your belognings and you during your move. Here’s the simple way to look at it:

How Can I Insure my Moving Truck?
Safemove is the standard protection option for U-Haul trucks and vans. Accidents can happen, so this optional coverage is available to give you peace of mind that your equipment and cargo is protected. It includes three components:
- Damage Waiver
- Cargo Protection
- Medical/Life Protection
Damage Waiver
The Safemove Damage Waiver frees you of responsibility for damage to the U-Haul truck. Without this waiver, you are responsible for damage up to the full replacement value of the U-Haul rental truck and other damages, including lost rental revenue.
Cargo Protection
This covers damage to your belongings resulting from collision, fire, windstorm or overturn of the truck. This protection is for actual cash value, and there is a $100 deductible per occurrence.

What Do I Get for Upgrading to Safemove Plus?
Safemove Plus has the same damage waiver, cargo protection, and medical/life protection as Safemove, but it also includes:
- $1,000,000 Supplemental Liability Coverage (SLI).
- $0 deductible on any accidental damage claims
- 100% overhead damage coverage
Safemove plus is available for U-Haul moving trucks only, not for cargo vans or pickup trucks.
Why is Supplemental Liability Insurance Important?
The included SLI with Safemove Plus safeguards your personal insurance policy for the first one million dollars of losses. That means this protection pays claims first before your own auto policies. SLI may provide duplicate coverage, so ask your insurance agent if you are not sure the extent of your policy’s coverage.

Should I Upgrade to Supplemental Roadside Protection?
All U-Haul rentals come with roadside assistance. But, if you want additional coverage, SafeTrip is available to help with common roadside issues during your rental, such as:
- Lockout services
- Lost keys
- Fuel service (up to three gallons)
- Stuck in mud or snow
- Jump starts
- Trailer/towing hookup problems
You can add SafeTrip online or in the U-Haul app any time prior to picking up the vehicle, or at the counter when you pick up your equipment.
Why is U-Haul Truck Insurance Important?
Choosing coverage is about avoiding surprises. A few key points to know:
- If you decline coverage, you’re responsible for all damage (including vandalism), regardless of fault.
- If you return equipment damaged without coverage, you can be charged for damage plus lost rental revenue while it’s being repaired.
- Many credit cards typically do not cover U-Haul trucks and trailers due to weight/size restrictions (always confirm with your card issuer).
- Many personal auto policies also may not cover rental moving trucks due to weight restrictions (confirm with your carrier).
I Already Declined Coverage, How do I Add it to My Rental?
You can add Safemove, Safemove Plus or SafeTrip any time before you pick up your moving truck. If you want to add coverage after pickup, you must return to the same pickup location within 30 minutes to request it. Ready to reserve your moving truck? Don’t forget to review your coverage options during checkout.
