How to Estimate the Mileage Fees for Your Move
When you rent a moving truck, you’re not only paying for cargo space, but also the number of miles you plan to travel (also known as your mileage). Mileage fees can change depending on a few factors, and this article is here to break it down for you!
How Much Does it Cost to Rent a U-Haul Truck?
Surprisingly, there’s more to the price of a rental truck than just size and distance. When and where you rent can also influence how much you pay.
While there isn’t a universal rental price, there are ways to calculate how much you’ll spend. The best way to get an accurate estimate for your move is by getting a quote.
In-Town Rental Cost Breakdown
When you pick up and drop off your U-Haul truck at the same location, we call that an in-town move. In-town moves have a flat rate – starting at $19.95 – plus a per mile fee. With in-town moves, you have an option to rent one of our various moving trucks, cargo vans, or rental pickup trucks.
Mileage Rates for In-Town Moves
We’ll ask you how many miles you plan on driving when you first rent with us, but if additional miles/days are needed, you can always update your reservation in the U-Haul App!
Keep in mind that mileage rates can change depending on a few factors like:
- Your current location
- The time of year (Rates usually go up April-August)
- The day of the week (Our rates are lowest Sunday through Thursday)
We offer special rates on extended cargo van and pickup truck rentals. All you need to do is select ‘extended days/miles special rates’ while renting either vehicle. From there, just let us know how long you’ll need the rental and how many miles you plan on driving.
One-Way Rental Cost Breakdown
If your move involves picking up a truck from one location and dropping it off at another, that’s called a one-way move. The cost for this type of rental is determined by the size of the truck, the moving date, and your starting/end location.
Mileage Rates for One-Way Moves
One-way rental prices come with a designated mileage allowance along with a predetermined number of days. If you need additional miles, they can be added at a rate of $1.00 per mile. Additional days can be added to one-way rentals for $40 per day.
