How to Safely Transport ATVs and Off-Road Vehicles

Last Updated:

Safely transporting an ATV or off-road vehicle starts with choosing the right trailer and securing it correctly. The U-Haul® Toy Hauler, our 16-foot flatbed utility trailer, offers a stable platform with built-in tie-down points designed for hauling powersports equipment.

Below, we’ll walk through why the Toy Hauler is often the best trailer to haul an ATV, how it compares to other trailers, and exactly how to secure an ATV on a trailer for the road ahead.

Why the Toy Hauler Is the Best Trailer to Haul an ATV

The Toy Hauler trailer is purpose-built for transporting recreational vehicles like ATVs, side-by-sides, and other off-road equipment. Compared to a basic utility trailer or flatbed trailer, the Toy Hauler provides added control during loading and towing.

Key advantages include:

  • Wide low-loading ramps for easier drive-on access
  • Integrated D-ring tie-down points for secure strapping
  • A flat, stable deck designed to support vehicle weight evenly
  • Brakes and safety systems designed for vehicle-in-tow use

Because ATVs are heavy and top-weighted, stability matters. A Toy Hauler helps reduce sway when loaded correctly, especially when weight is positioned toward the front of the trailer, with 60% in front of the loading line and 40% behind it as instructed. We recommend reading the user guide for more detailed information.

Toy Hauler vs. Auto Transport vs. Flatbed Trailer

While several trailer types can be used to move an ATV, not all options offer the same level of convenience.

Utility Trailer

A utility trailer can work for smaller ATVs, but it has fewer tie-down points and a shorter deck. This can make it harder to position the ATV correctly and secure it from all angles.

Auto Transport

The U-Haul Auto Transport is equipped with an easy-access loading ramp, security chains, and ratchet-operated tire straps, but it has fewer tie-down points and a lower maximum load towing capacity of 5,290 lbs.

For most customers, the Toy Hauler strikes the best balance. It’s designed specifically for vehicle transport, with loading geometry and securement features that make it easier to follow proper safety practices.

How to Secure an ATV on a Trailer

Knowing how to secure an ATV on a trailer is just as important as choosing the right equipment.

Step 1: Load the ATV Facing Forward

Always load your ATV with the front end closest to the trailer hitch. This helps maintain proper tongue weight and reduces the risk of sway while driving.

Step 2: Position Weight Correctly

Follow the 60/40 rule: about 60% of the total cargo weight should be in the front half of the trailer. Improper loading can cause dangerous sway or whipping at highway speeds.

Step 3: Use Proper Tie-Down Straps

Secure the ATV at four points using heavy-duty ratchet straps:

  • Two straps pulling forward from the front of the ATV
  • Two straps pulling rearward from the back

Attach straps to solid frame points, not plastic or suspension components. Tighten evenly so the ATV’s suspension compresses slightly without bottoming out. Keep in mind you will need to provide your own straps when you rent a Toy Hauler.

Step 4: Double-Check Connections

Before driving:

  • Confirm all tie-downs are tight
  • Check the trailer coupler, safety cables, and lighting connections
  • Recheck straps after the first few miles and at every stop

Safe Driving Tips When Hauling an ATV

Driving with a loaded trailer is very different from driving a vehicle on its own, so it’s important to practice safe driving when hauling an ATV or off-road vehicle.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Drive at moderate speeds and allow extra stopping distance
  • Slow down immediately if you notice sway
  • Avoid sudden steering or braking
  • Take turns wider than usual to account for trailer width

A steady, patient approach goes a long way toward a safe trip.
