What Insurance Options Are Available for U-Box Portable Storage Containers?

Last Updated:

U-Box® customers can add optional coverage to help protect their belongings during storage and shipping. By default, your items are not insured while in shipping or storage with U-Box containers, so choosing coverage can help you avoid a big out-of-pocket surprise if something unexpected happens.

U-Box Customers Have Two Coverage Options

When you build your U-Box quote, you may see optional coverage listed as Safehaul® and Safestor®. These are add-ons designed to help protect the value of your belongings if they’re damaged during the parts of the move that U-Haul handles.

Here’s the simple breakdown:

Can I Insure My Moving Container Items When in storage?

If you plan on storing your containers at a U-Haul storage facility, even for a short period of time between homes, Safestor is the coverage designed for that period.

Safestor is designed to be low-cost storage insurance that covers loss or damage of your stored goods from major perils such as fire, burglary, earthquake, or flood.  Check out our damage protection page for the full list of coverage.

What Storage Coverage Options are Available for U-Box Containers?

The optional Safestor coverage for U-Box containers is offered in set coverage levels: $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, or $20,000 per container.

Tip: A good starting point is to estimate the value of the items you’d have the hardest time replacing quickly (kids’ bedroom sets, everyday furniture, small appliances), then pick the nearest coverage level.

Can I Insure My Moving Container Items During Shipping?

If you’re shipping U-Box containers, Safehaul is the option designed to help protect your belongings while they’re being shipped to your next destination

U-Haul is not responsible for damage caused by third-party shipping carrier negligence, so Safehaul is available to protect your items and give you peace of mind.

Like Safestor, Safehaul is available in coverage levels of $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 or $20,000 per container.

Important: If you opt to purchase coverage, you will be purchasing for all U-Box containers on your contract.

What Items Are NOT Covered by Safehaul?

Safehaul insurance does not cover valuable items, including but not limited to: money, stamps, jewelry including watches, antiques, furs, motorized vehicles, bills, art, property deeds, credit cards or other securities. Burglary coverage only applies when there is evidence of forced entry and a police report has been filed.

Are There Insurance Options for Moving Help® Providers?

Whether you're moving or storing with U-Box containers, you can hire labor through the Moving Help® Marketplace to load or unload your items. Qualifying Service Providers offer Safeload® to cover any damages that may occur while your items are being handled. Coverage options range from $500 to $5,000 and are subject to Safeload exclusions

Do I Need Insurance For My Storage Containers?

Even with careful packing, moving and storage involve real-world risks and potential accidents. Adding optional coverage can help in three practical ways:

  • Protects your budget: Replacing household goods can get expensive fast.
  • Reduces stress: You can focus on the move instead of worrying about worst-case scenarios.
  • Lets you choose your comfort level: With set coverage levels, you can pick what fits your situation.

How Does Insurance Get Billed for U-Box containers?

In your U-Box quote, coverage options appear as an optional line item, along with other add-ons like Moving Help and packing supplies. For Safehaul insurance coverage, you’ll be billed for the one-time cost 5 days before your containers are expected to arrive at your destination. For Safestor insurance coverage, you’ll be charged for the first month of coverage on the morning of your container delivery and then billed every 30 days for as long as you are renting your containers.
