How to Safely Store Propane Tanks

Propane tanks must be handled and stored carefully if you want to keep your propane system safe and operating efficiently. You can effectively manage your propane tank storage by following recommendations sourced from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC).

Where to Store Propane Tanks

Avoid Indoor Storage

Never bring propane tanks indoors. This includes places like your home, garage, or shed. To avoid dangerous situations, all propane-related activities, including usage, inspection, and refilling, should be handled outside.

Choose the Right Environment

Store your propane tank in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated area. Directed sunlight can cause a tank to overheat, which can lead to danger situations. Ensuring good ventilation helps to disperse any potential gas leaks.

Tank Stability and Handling

Keep Tanks Upright

Always store your propane tank in an upright position. For added stability, U-Haul recommends using a Tankfoot Propane Tank Holder Stabilizer or an EZGO Propane Tank Holder & Stabilizer. These holders secure your tank in place and prevent it from tipping over.

Avoid Enclosed Vehicles

Never leave your propane tank inside an enclosed vehicle for an extended period. Doing so can cause the pressure relief valve to activate, potentially filling your vehicle with flammable propane vapor. If this occurs, evacuate the area and contact the fire department immediately.

Leak Detection and Maintenance

Regular Leak Checks

It is important to regularly inspect your propane tank, valves, and connector hose for leaks or signs of wear and tear. This applies regardless of the tank’s age or how long you plan to store it. If you don’t know how to check for leaks, check out this instruction.

Smell for Leaks

Propane is naturally odorless, but a distinctive odor resembling rotten eggs or skunk spray is added to help detect leaks. If you identify this smell, your tank may leak, and you should take immediate action to address it. Make sure your tank is placed outside. Return to the tank after 5-10 minutes. If the smell is gone, bring your tank to the closest U-Haul propane Refill Center to be looked at. If you return to your tank and there is still a strong smell being released, call 911 to have the tank professionally inspected.

By adhering to these safety practices, you can ensure the secure and efficient storage of your propane tank, minimizing risks and enhancing overall safety.
