What If My Propane Tank Is Expiring?

Like all appliances, propane tanks wear out and require attention. Most tanks have a safe lifespan of 12 years before expiration. Expiring tanks need to be professionally inspected since an expired tank cannot legally be filled. By law, any tank past its expiration date must be recertified or properly disposed.

Information about propane tank expiration.

How Old Is My Tank?

To find the age of your tank, look for the manufacturing date. This date will be metal stamped into the collar of the tank. Before commuting to your propane vendor, look at your current tank's manufactured date. If your tank is about to expire, we recommend purchasing a new tank.

Signs of an Expiring Tank

Knowing when your propane tank needs replacement is necessary for both performance and safety. Look for these crucial indicators:

  • Expiration Date: Verify the stamped date on the tank. If the expiration date has passed or is approaching, it's time to consider replacing it.
  • Damage and Rust: Inspect the tank for physical damage such as dents, rust, or damage to the valve seal. These issues can compromise the tank's integrity and safety.
  • Problems with Performance: If you experience irregular fuel flow, have trouble lighting appliances, or smell the scent of rotten eggs, there may be issues with the tank. If you notice any of these signs, U-Haul recommends having your tank inspected.

What if My Tank Is Expired?

If you notice that your current tank is expired, U-Haul recommends these options:

  • Contact your local sanitation department to locate a proper disposal area.
  • Find your nearest U-Haul propane refill location where they can properly dispose of the tank.

Replace vs. Recertify: Making the Choice

When dealing with an expiring propane tank, you have two options: replace or recertify.

  • Replacement: Replacing your tank with a new one eliminates any safety concerns associated with an aged tank. Typically ranging from $45 to $55 USD, replacing your propane tank ensures that you have reliable equipment with a long lifespan.
  • Recertification: Tanks can be recertified by a qualified technician in your area. This involves a thorough visual inspection to ensure the tank is safe to use. Recertification can be a cost-effective option, typically ranging from $10 to $35 USD. U-Haul recommends choosing a vendor that uses a metal stamp or laser etching to apply a new expiration date. Certification decals are not recommended by U-Haul because these stickers are easily damaged, affecting readability. You also run the risk of counterfeit or fake decals. Once recertified, you can safely use your tank for another 5 years.
