How Much Can I Insure in a U-Haul Storage Unit?

There is no deductible on any of the levels of coverage!
What is Not Covered by U-Haul Storage Insurance?
Safestor has some important exclusions customers should know up front. Here is a list of what Safestore does not cover.
- Theft or mysterious disappearance, but does provide protection for burglary where there’s evidence of forced entry and a police report is filed.
- Damage or loss incurred while a U-Box container is at your residence or drop-off location.
- Safestor does not specifically provide protection for jewelry, furs, money, artwork, antiques, securities, documents, or motorized vehicles.
- Safestor does not provide protection for loss resulting from war or climatic conditions like rust or mildew.
How Do I Add U-Haul Storage Insurance?
Safestor is designed to be simple to add:
- Safestor can be added at any time from the U-Haul App or online in your account at uhaul.com
- Speak to a U-Haul representative in-store or over the phone and explain you want Safestor and select your protection level.
- U-Haul personnel will itemize Safestor on your rental receipt and collect the fee in addition to your storage fee.
- Protection is effective when itemized on your receipt and the appropriate fee has been paid.
Your protection is billed as a month-to-month charge in addition to your monthly storage fee. To keep your coverage active, the Safestor fee must accompany your rental payment each month.
Do I Really Need Storage Insurance?
The short answer is yes. Insurance is required at every U-Haul self-storage facility. Safestor is optional, and if you choose to decline, you must provide proof of either renter or homeowner insurance.
Some homeowners or renter insurance policies may restrict the amount of coverage provided for goods stored away from your primary residence, so it is best to check with your insurance provider on what your coverage is.
Ready to protect what matters most? Add Safestor insurance to your U-Haul self-storage unit today and store with confidence. Select coverage online, in person or talk to a U-Haul representative over the phone to choose your coverage level and get the protection your belongings deserve.
