Nissan Pathfinder Hitch Installation Steps

1. Remove Spare Tire

Our first step in this hitch installation process will be to remove the vehicle’s spare tire. To access the spare tire we will need to remove a bolt found underneath the floor panel.

2. Lower Exhaust

With the spare tire removed, we can now lower the vehicle’s exhaust as well. To start we will be applying a support strap to ensure the exhaust doesn’t hang. Now using our exhaust pliers we will remove the two rear-most exhaust hangers.

3. Trim Rear Fascia Panel

A trim is required on the vehicle’s rear fascia. We will be using an air saw to make this cut, however, any proper cutting tool should suffice.

4. Raise Hitch into Position

With the underbody of the vehicle now prepared for the addition of the hitch, we can now raise it into position.

5. Install Provided Hardware

To secure the hitch to the vehicle’s frame we will now install the provided hardware. Three bolts with conical washers will need to be installed on each side of the vehicle.

6. Tighten and Torque Hardware

Now with our hardware installed, we will tighten and torque the hitch according to the manufacturer’s specifications using a 19mm socket.

7. Re-Install Exhaust and Spare Tire

At this point, all you need to do to complete your hitch installation process is to re-install the vehicle’s exhaust and spare tire.

You should now have your trailer hitch installed on your Nissan Pathfinder.

Do You Need a Wiring Kit for a Nissan Pathfinder?

If you are planning to tow a trailer or camper with brake lights, running lights, and turn signal, you will want a wiring kit to power the lights on your trailer. The most common lighting harness comes in a 4 pin and 7 pin connector.  The 4- way connector has basic lighting functions (running lights, brake lights, turn signal) while the 7-way connector adds a 12-volt circuit, circuit for electric trailer brakes, and reverse lights. U-Haul offers both 4-way and 7-way connectors.  Find out which option is best for your Nissan Pathfinder.
