5 Tips for Organizing Your Storage Shed

When it comes to organizing your home, one thing you shouldn’t forget about is the storage shed. This space is notorious for becoming overwhelmed with clutter and junk. So, if you feel a sense of dread when you think about trying to organize it, you’re not alone!

Like most reorganization projects, trying to organize your shed will take some preparation and effort. But a well-organized shed isn’t out of reach, all you need is a free afternoon to get it all done! Not sure where to start? We got you covered.

Take Stock of What You Have

There’s no way to get around this one. In order to organize your shed, you’ll have to figure out what’s already in there. Depending on the state of your shed, this might take a while! Luckily, with an outdoor storage shed, you have plenty of room to spread out.

Sort Through It

Storage sheds are an easy place to shove anything that you don’t know what to do with. It’s easy to forget about it all when it’s out of sight and out of mind. But it sure does catch up to you! Chances are, you probably have a lot of things you have no use for inside your shed. So, be sure to have a place to toss your junk.

It’s also a good idea to start a donation pile. Just because you’re decluttering doesn’t mean you have to throw it all away. While something may not be of use to you anymore, it may be perfect for someone else!

Group Like Items

Before you start envisioning how your organized shed will look, try to group together all the items you plan to store together.

Sheds will typically have items like:

  • Electric tools
  • Hand tools
  • Yard and gardening supplies
  • Paints
  • Cords and cables
  • Nuts, bolts, and screws
  • Surplus storage
  •

Find Storage Options that Work with Your Space

Depending on the size of your shed, you might have limited space to work with. It can feel overwhelming to try and figure out how to maximize your space, but here are a few storage suggestions:

Install Adjustable Shelving: You can get a good set of adjustable shelves for around 50 dollars. These are pretty self-explanatory; but they’re shelves you can adjust! You can move these shelves to accommodate the height of different items. This is a great storage option that gives you an additional layer of flexibility.

Don’t have the money to spend on adjustable shelves? Check to see if you have an old bookcase, instead! While these won’t come with adjustable shelves, they do provide a good amount of storage. And if you already have one at your house, nothing beats the price of free!

Storing Tools: Depending on the size of your tools, there are a few ways to store them. For smaller tools like screwdrivers, wrenches, or pliers, a magnetic strip is a great way to keep them organized and free up precious drawer space.

Storing Larger Tools

Larger tools may be harder to manage, but there are cost effective ways to organize them! For example, you can find a wooden pallet at any hardware store. But did you know that they’re also a great size for larger tools? You can slide things like shoves and rakes at the top of the pallet and allow them to stand up straight against the wall. Hooks are also a great way to accomplish the same kind of idea.

Use Overhead Space: If you don’t have a lot of space on the ground, try using your ceiling for extra room! Overhead storage is relatively easy to install and frees up so much room you wouldn’t previously have. This is a great place to put extra boxes of surplus storage.

Install a Slat Wall or Pegboard: Both slat walls and pegboards are something you can put on the walls of your shed. But both will require you to attach some hooks in order to hang things. Depending on the material its made from, slat walls may be longer lasting and less prone to breakage than pegboards. But for the most part, it’s a matter of personal preference.

Add a Workbench or Cabinet: You don’t need to be a crafty person to reap the benefits of a workbench. Workbenches come with plenty of storage space. The drawers can hold tiny things, like nuts, bolts, and screws. It also gives you a space for working on any future projects—a must for any homeowner!

Keep Up with Organization

The best way to keep your shed from getting cluttered is by trying to keep up with organization a little bit at a time. Rather than waiting a few months to do a reset, why not try to do a small weekly refresh? That way, you won’t have to worry about ripping everything out and trying to make it fit again.
