How to Insure Your U-Box Container: Coverage Options & Costs

Last Updated:

Your belongings are not automatically insured when they are stored or transported in U-Box® containers. Depending on your reservation, you may be able to add Safestor® coverage for storage, Safehaul® coverage for shipping and Safeload® coverage when hiring an eligible Moving Help® Service Provider.

Coverage is optional and subject to terms, limitations, and exclusions. Review your U-Box quote and the full coverage documents before making your selection.

Coverage Options Available For U-Box Customers:

When building your U-Box quote, you may see two optional coverage plans.

  • Safestor: Coverage for eligible belongings stored in U-Box containers at a secure U-Haul storage facility.
  • Safehaul: Coverage for eligible belongings while U-Box containers are being transported.

If you hire an eligible Service Provider through the Moving Help® Marketplace, Safeload coverage may also be available.

Safestor Coverage for U-Box Container Storage

If you plan to store your containers at a secure U-Haul storage facility, even for a short period of time, Safestor may be the right coverage option for you.

Safestor is designed to cover eligible belongings against loss or damage while stored in U-Box containers at secure U-Haul storage facilities. Covered events may include fire, burglary, earthquake and flood. Visit our damage protection page to review coverage details and exclusions.

Safestor offers four coverage amounts:

  • $1,000 per container
  • $5,000 per container
  • $10,000 per container
  • $20,000 per container

Protection is based on the actual cash value of eligible belongings.

There is no deductible for Safestor coverage in the United States. There is, however, a $100 deductible for vermin claims in Canada.

U-Haul tip: A good starting point is to estimate the value of the items you’d need to replace, such as kids’ bedroom sets, everyday furniture and small appliances. Then, choose the coverage level closest to that amount.

Do I Need Insurance For My Storage Containers?

Coverage is optional, but moving and storage can involve unexpected risks even when you pack carefully.

Before selecting coverage, check whether your homeowners, renters or other insurance policy covers your belongings while they are stored away from your home or transported during a move.

Adding optional coverage may help in three practical ways:

    1. Helps protect your budget: Coverage may help with eligible costs after a covered loss or damage.
    2. Adds peace of mind: Coverage gives you one less thing to worry about during your move.
    3. Offers flexibility: You can select the coverage amount that best fits your situation.

How Is U-Box Container Coverage Billed?

Coverage charges depend on the product you select:

  • Safestor: Billed monthly, per container. The first charge is billed on the morning of your initial container delivery.
  • Safehaul: Billed as a one-time, per-container charge five days before your containers are scheduled to arrive at the destination.
  • Safeload: Added to an eligible Moving Help reservation based on the coverage amount selected.

Coverage appears as an optional line item in your reservation or quote.
