What Features Do the Steel U-Box Containers Offer?

The steel U-Box containers are another way U-Haul leads the pack in the DIY moving and storage industry. The containers feature:

  • Rust-resistant steel frame
  • Engineered composite panels
  • Four ventilation points to prevent moisture buildup
  • Single-piece weather-resistant roof
  • Fully sealing swing door
  • Two steel locking latches
  • Multiple tie-down rings inside the container

The new U-Box containers are made from the same tried and true materials as U-Haul single axle trailers to give you the same confidence in the strength and durability of the container for your moving and storage needs.

What Are the Benefits of a Steel Frame?

Using a galvanized steel frame for the new U-Box containers makes them highly resistant to rust and corrosion. This construction also keeps the new U-Box containers light and thus costs less to transport, meaning you can still expect the same low costs from the leader in moving. Galvanized steel is great because of:

  • Rust resistance
  • Long-lasting
  • Structural durability

Why are the New U-Box Containers Superior to Competitors?

The steel U-Box container features walls and a door that are durable, abrasion-resistant, and puncture-resistant. They are manufactured for long-lasting durability and outperform aluminum and FRP panels in nearly every way. The key features and benefits are:

  • Water-repellent and corrosion resistant: no rust, mildew, or degradation
  • Impact and puncture resistant: lightweight ballistic strength
  • Antimicrobial protection: inhibits bacterial and fungal growth
  • Long-lasting UV stability and insulation: protects your items from the elements
  • 100% recyclable and eco-friendly: environmentally responsible choice

The walls of the U-Box container also allow light into the container for easier loading at all times of day.

How are U-Box Containers Properly Ventilated?

While the walls of the U-Box container are designed to keep the elements out, each container also has four vents that provide airflow to prevent moisture from being trapped inside, which prevents mold and mildew growth in humid climates.

The unique ventilation design is also design to not let any rain water inside the container, keeping your items moisture free. This is key for keeping U-Box containers at your home, work, or anywhere else you need on-site storage.

Most other steel containers on the market are not ventilated which can lead to an excess of moisture and mildew on precious belongings.

Is a Full-Sealing Swing Door Better Than a Roll-Up Door?

U-Haul uses a swing door for its portable U-Box containers for their superior quality and security when compared to roll-up doors.

  • More secure and weather-resistant, especially in transit
  • Items shifting won’t jam the container closed
  • More overhead space to pack inside the container
  • Accessibility friendly

Why Do U-Box Containers Have Two Steel Locking Latches?

The two steel locking latches provide double the security for your items when stored in U-Box containers. Many kinds of locks work with a U-Box container, but we recommend the U-Haul 1-9/16” Brass Security Lock, available at most U-Haul locations.

Where are U-Box Containers Available?

  • U-Box containers are available at more than 2,000 U-Haul locations across the United States and Canada.
  • As U-Haul transitions to the new container model, both wood and steel versions will be available. Which model container you get depends on local availability.
  • If you order multiple containers, you may receive some of both versions, depending on local availability.
  • Both containers are similarly sized and offer a durable, weather-resistant way to move or store your belongings.
