Extremely understaffed on a busy moving day. Had to wait too long, both in the pick-up and drop-off operations. The truck also only had just over 1/4 tank of gas when picked up, very frustrating to be forced to get gas myself just to accomplish the tasks, never-mind return it to not be charged. Most frustrating thing was I reserved a truck online, and did not select any return time as it was a complicated move and I could not predict to any degree of accuracy how long it would take. When picking up the truck at 7:00am I was informed I needed to bring the truck back by 1:00pm! I told the counter person that was not enough time, and he said he could push it back to 4:00, but that was the best he could do. I told him I didn't think that would do it, but that I needed the truck, so I would take it anyway. I ended up having the truck back by about 5:15pm, and was told I would have to pay an additional days rental fee, this when I did not even have the truck for 12 hours, and I had not agreed to such a short time period when reserving the truck. What if I had needed it overnight? Why was this not confirmed with me when making the reservation in the first place if it was so strict? I will say that the staff at the counter was actually nice and helpful, despite the fact that there just were not enough of them to properly serve. The man that rang me up upon return was actually not even on the clock, but had stopped in, and I certainly appreciate the fact he stepped up to help out with the long lines. The woman who received the truck into the return bay and did the paperwork was a different story altogether. She was rude, barking orders loudly and curtly with not a single please. She was extremely rude when she saw I was a bit late, and all but accused me of stealing an appliance dolly which I never took. (The truck had a regular dolly in it when it was given to me, and I assumed that was the dolly I was paying for, so I never took another). All in all, not a great experience, but not terrible. I recommend ensuring better staffing especially on such a busy weekend, confirming reservation needs particularly in regards to the time needed, and some serious customer service training for the woman who received the truck back upon my return. (By the way- I am a retail manager, and know customer service. I understand that people have stressful days and off days, but I could easily tell that her service was a mechanically repeatable pattern, with no care for the customer.)

This was by far the best UHaul experience I have ever had. Efficient. That's the name of the game here and I loved it. Pickup of the truck was super fast. The pulled the truck up to the front door while I was signing the contract. In all pickup time was about five minutes. I needed the truck for a few hours longer than in the contract. I called them up and let them know. No problem and no additional charge. Dropping off the truck was easier than picking it up! They have a drive through drop off bay. After a quick inspection I paid by balance right in the drop off bay and that was it. I used to dread Uhaul but now I can't wait to move again! Just kidding. But the whole experience at the Portland, Maine location was excellent. Five Stars.

DISCLAIMER: THIS COMMENT REVIEW DOES NOT PERTAIN TO THE PORTLAND LOCATION BUT THE SACO LOCATION AS THAT IS WHERE I HAVE ALWAYS RESERVED MY TRUCKS AT. Saco: Better customer service, I've had two back to back reservations conflicts with this location. The first time I reserved a storage unit with my one way for free except the lady never reserved the storage unit and I ended up 30 miles away from my home without a storage unit, just to be told the location I am at (Portland) is sold out and I would need to drive an additional 20 miles to Brunswick for a unit (nowhere near my home). I would like to add that when I picked up my truck I asked the lady checking me in if the storage was all set to which she replied affirmatively (I have this entire conversation on recording.) Both the reservation along with my call to customer service after the fact to straighten the mess out were recorded. The second trip which was this past Friday which was just as bad. I called at 11:30 am to tell them I would be late picking up my 17' truck by about an hour when they told they basically changed the reservation to 4:30 PM with a 20' truck because the 17' broke down, then changed that to a 26' because someone went under a bridge too small with the 20' but I would have to go to Portland to pick it up, they did comp miles and gave me an extra day which was awesome. However I did book this trip knowing almost exactly what I was spending on everything and did not count on the additional gas. At first impression I thought the lady on the phone was going to tell me they didn't have a truck period, when I told her I had hired movers to help with this move and would have damages she asked me if she could go track down another truck and call me back. Which she did, and she did quickly while telling me she would comp the miles. None of these events made my moving experience easier, in fact Uhaul made them slightly worse. So, Saco needs to get it in shape. I've dealt with Portland, Brunswick, and Augusta and they have all nailed my experience. PORTLAND: Great! Wasn't their fault I didn't have a storage waiting for me, they are quick, prompt, and helpful. They also have the equipment needed to get the job done, large facility! Keep up the good work!

When I picked up the truck and did a walk around inspection, the back driver's tire had a 2" wide and 1" deep gouge out of the tire. This large chunk was sticking out away from the tire. When I brought this to the attention of staff, I was told it would be fine. When I returned with the truck, I had put 11.6 gallons of fuel in the rental (I was told that the truck gets approximately 8 mpg). I had traveled a total of 79 miles. By these calculations (which I was going by) even if it only got 7 mpg, I had put more than enough fuel in the truck. The needle on the fuel guage continuously wavered back and forth in a range of one quarter of the fuel guage, so the only way I could know how much fuel to put in was by the above mentioned calculations. I was charged over $38.00 upon my return and displayed my fuel receipt that I had just received upon fueling. I was told that it was substantially lower than when I had left and would be charged. I believe that I was completely taken advantage of in this situation and will strongly encourage any family or friends to no longer use U-Haul for their moving needs.

I registered on line and entered i wanted the van for 220 miles and would return it by 6 pm. When dropping it off at 6 pm, i was told it was two hours late and i went over 137 miles. I was never told when i picked it up it was due by 4 PM and i only registered it for 100 miles. The lady took care of the confusion yet it was uncomfortable for both us standing there. Your WEB site is either terrible or the man who took care of me when i got there never confirmed the details. FYI. This is the second time this has happened to me. I like U-haul but there is no need for this level of care.

I had my reservation booked via online for 11 am but when we got there they said they change it to 3pm. I did not get any prior notification or anything. I showed them my confirmation email with the time and they said that that wasn't an official confirmation even though it said confirmed and there was no indication that I was going to be contacted. I had planned my whole day around pickup at 11 so I was very upset.

We begged to use a truck for 24 hrs were told repeatedly that there was nothingaavailable. After unloading a ful truck to make it back in time. I went to my appointmeny making sure the truck was back for the person who reserved it. After my appointment I went back to the u haul to find trucks everywhere. So I had to rent and reload the truck. was back for the next user

I reserved a van in Windham, which was 7 miles from the house. Was told I need to go to Portland which was 20 miles from the house. We were only moving 2 miles from our current location. So I had to pay an extra $24 in mileage just to drive to and from uhaul. Gas only cost me $11 to top off. On top of that, i was renting for 2 days and was told i need to drop off early. I asked for a small discount to compensate and got a huge attitude from counter staff AND from customer service. The only thing customer service did was give me my time I was paying for. I will not use U-haul again after this experience.

Not only did the change my reservation without notifying me, but I had to upgrade in order to get a vehicle on the day I wanted one. The manager did NOTHING to try and accommodate me in any way for THEIR mistake. Never again will I use any U-Haul, not just this one, that's how bad my experience was.

1. We lost half an hour and experienced considerable frustration because we could not find how to release the emergency brake with a voice ordering us to do so about 50 times but not bothering to tell us how or where. We called in and took two or three transfers before someone could tell us where the release is, i.e. where four of us did not see it, raised 3/8 inch letters on the dashboard in the same beige color as the dashboard. It would have taken two seconds to roll a color on the raised letters so that they would be visible! As a consequence, we finished loading the truck after dark. 2. Again, as a year or two back, we are unhappy with your calculation of gas used. We drove 12 miles and idled no more than three minutes but are hit for 5 1/2 gallons. I did not return the vehicle so do not know how the fuel tank was marked 7/8ths, as the contract indicates but that is an erroneous measure unless the truck gets only a bit over two miles to the gallon!!!!

Back of the truck was dirty and full of pads when I picked it up and when I returned it the nasty women accused me of not sweeping and leaving pads strewn about. Customer service needs to be worked on. I will go elsewhere next time I need to rent.

great customer service booking this location convenient hours for pick up, a note not in relation to either of the location but only complaint is that everytime that I tried to get transferred to the dept that handles updating drop off locations your phone system would drop call on my transfer. happened 3 times last time I asked for the direct # and they did help

A few things... you didn't have any 10 ft. trucks available. The man who was working at the desk was trying to get his cell phone to charge whilst I waited in line for a few minutes. He definitely saw me, but decided that his cell phone was more important than my time. Finally, the truck was clean but not well maintained. The change oil light was illuminated when I received the vehicle.
