U-Haul of Midtown Adding Self-Storage to Former Furniture Store

TULSA, Okla. (Aug. 1, 2016) — U-Haul customers in and around Tulsa will soon have secure and convenient self-storage options with the upcoming completion of U-Haul Moving & Storage of Midtown at 3500 S. Sheridan Road.

Located at Interstate 44 and Highway 51, U-Haul began serving customers on Feb. 21 with truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment and moving supplies. Self-storage units will be added in phases over the next year. When construction is finished, the 164,000-square-foot building will feature more than 2,000 state-of-the-art units.

“This is going to be a huge facility,” U-Haul Company of Tulsa president Jim Smith said. “We’re moving our Tulsa marketing company office to this location by late summer. Through the promotion of local hiring, we hope to employ more than 40 part- and full-time Team Members here within the first five years.”

The 6.41-acre property was last home to Mathis Brothers Furniture Company. When the U-Haul makeover is completed, customers will have access to propane and professional hitch installation in addition to state-of-the-art self-storage.

“Adaptive reuse is a huge part of this community,” Smith said. “Because of the amount of square footage at this property, not a lot of businesses could utilize the space. But U-Haul has the opportunity to bring self-storage to an area where it is needed while also preventing a large space from being torn down or becoming an eyesore.”

The acquisition of the Midtown facility was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

By reusing the former furniture store, U-Haul prevented 1,027 tons metal manufacturing and transportation from being used, avoided 9,675 tons of new concrete pours, kept 10,807 tons of construction and demolition debris out of landfills, and stopped 8,025,553 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere.
