U-Haul of South Street Will Offer Storage to Lafayette, Purdue Students
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Feb. 29, 2016) — U-Haul Moving & Storage of South Street will soon become a “Grade A facility” offering indoor climate-controlled storage units, towing equipment and hitch installation, a U-Box self-storage container warehouse, and much more.
Build-out for the 3861 South St. location will occur in phases. Plans are still being formulated.
U-Haul Company of Central Indiana president Anthony Jones noted that his Lafayette team has been proudly serving do-it-yourself moving customers since July. Truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies and additional products are currently available at the former Wal-Mart® site.
“I know the community is excited about us being here,” Jones said. “This is going to be a Grade A facility. Customers here haven’t had a full-service store near West Lafayette, and now we have the opportunity to serve them in their community.”
The 122,989-square-foot facility sits on 12 acres and is part of a shopping plaza that houses five other tenants, including a hair and nail salon and a dental office. Jones said that plans call for U-Haul to maintain its existing tenants and expand around them.
U-Haul Moving & Storage of South Street fills the void left by the closing of the U-Haul store at 301 Sagamore Pkwy. S., which ceased operations in favor of being able to better meet customer expectations at the new store.
“This is a big college town, and we needed to be able offer the service of self-storage,” U-Haul area district vice president Bill Rains explained.
Jones said that his location will be the moving and storage hub for Purdue University. The store is four miles east of campus and a few blocks west of Interstate 65 at exit 172.
The acquisition of the South Street location was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint.
