U-Haul Opens Store at Abandoned Chinese Restaurant Site in Cicero

CICERO, N.Y. (May 4, 2016) — U-Haul Company’s acquisition and adaptive reuse of an abandoned Chinese restaurant has Cicero residents excited for the reduction in blight and the additional moving and storage options available in their community.

Since opening recently, U-Haul Moving & Storage at Business Avenue II at 7803 Brewerton Road has been offering a full line of products and services including truck and trailer rentals, truck sales, storage, towing equipment and professional hitch installation, moving supplies and boxes, propane, U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers, and much more.

“People started to stop while we were under construction to say how happy they were to see a property that had become an eyesore turn into something of value,” U-Haul Company of North Central New York president Mike Streeter said. “When we officially opened, several customers even asked if we would have Chinese takeout. It made for a good laugh.”

The 1.28-acre property features a 5,053-square-foot building that will be converted to a U-Haul showroom. The facility has a newly paved parking lot and a state of the art security system. There also is the possibility of additional future storage for U-Box containers.

This property is operated in conjunction with U-Haul Moving & Storage at Business Avenue, which is located at just down the road at 5600 Business Ave.

“I have worked for U-Haul in this area for 35-plus years and have developed many business relationships in the community,” Streeter noted. “I have had nothing but positive feedback about our bright, new location on Brewerton Road. It makes all of us really proud.”

The acquisition of the Cicero facility was driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
