U-Haul Reveals Plans to Expand Self-Storage Footprint in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (Aug. 14, 2017) — U-Haul® corporate sustainability initiatives are being applied through the adaptive reuse of the former Kmart® department store at the North Point Mall in Baltimore.

U-Haul Moving & Storage of Eastpoint at 222 N. Point Blvd. currently offers truck and trailer sharing, moving supplies and U-Box portable moving and storage containers out of a temporary showroom. U-Haul acquired the 95,810-square-foot building on Aug. 9.

Renovation plans call for the creation of 60,000 square feet of indoor self-storage with high-tech security features at affordable price points. There will also be approximately 15,000 square feet of outdoor drive-up self-storage and RV, boat and vehicle storage on the 11.25-acre property.

Self-storage will be available starting early next year. Professional hitch installation and propane will also be offered in the near future.

“I’m excited to bring top-of-the-line moving and self-storage services to this part of Baltimore,” said Mike Finkelstein, U-Haul Company of Baltimore president. “Dundalk was one of the first inner-ring suburbs of Baltimore and this facility will finally service that community.”

The recent acquisition of the Eastpoint facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill developments to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

“U-Haul is pleased to reuse older buildings because it benefits the community in so many ways,” Finkelstein said. “This building was originally built in 1974. It was renovated in 1997, so it’s in really good shape. We’re going to make it even better.”

Finkelstein expects to employ a robust staff of full- and part-time U-Haul Team Members when the facility is fully operational. U-Haul will look to hire locally to promote job growth in Baltimore. U-Haul always encourages local contractors to bid on construction work.
