I came across a story recently about a clock shop in Hannibal, Missouri that’s refurbishing an old grandfather clock that belonged to the family of Laura Hawkins. She was Mark Twain’s childhood sweetheart and served as the inspiration for Becky Thatcher in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
The clock guys had to take apart the grandfather clock—believed to be about 200 years old—and pack it and move it from the Mark Twain Museum to their shop across the street. As I looked at the story’s photos and video, I couldn’t help but think how nervous I’d be taking apart something so old and irreplaceable, then packing it up and moving it. They obviously took great care to make sure everything made it to the shop intact.
It’s the same as packing up everything in your home and moving it. You might not be moving a 200-year-old clock that has great historical significance, but your stuff is priceless to you, so you want to do all you can to protect it. And thankfully, gone are the days when everything had to go into “one-size-fits-all” boxes.
There are so many specialized boxes available for moving and storage these days. There are boxes made to fit all sizes of mirrors and picture frames, boxes with dividers to protect dishes or wine bottles, and boxes for golf clubs.

When you pick up some specialty boxes for your move, don’t forget the bubble wrap, packing peanuts, wrapping paper and other protective moving items.
