According to Forbes, Austin has been America’s fastest-growing city for four years in a row. So if you have decided to move to Austin, you are not alone! Austin is known for its unique culture and nightlife which makes moving there a special experience. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Weather
It doesn’t get terribly cold in the winters (50s to 60s), but it can get into the 100s in the summer, so if you can avoid moving in the summer, that would be best. If you must move in the summer, make sure to drink lots of water and that the utilities are on at your new place. The last thing you want is to have to move with no air conditioning.
Because it isn’t particularly cold in Austin, you may also want to reassess your belongings. If you are moving from a colder environment, you probably have a lot of heavy winter clothing that you will not be using. Consider putting that and similar items in storage. No need to clutter your new home the moment you get there!
In addition, the University of Texas is in Austin, you have to keep into account that there are students that will be looking for storage. Make sure you have your storage reserved before the summer hits, otherwise you might be out of luck!
Layout
Austin is a very spread out city with lots of different neighborhoods, so it is important to get to know the layout. The neighborhood you live in will depend on what kind of lifestyle you are looking for. Austin has a variety of recreation to choose from; so no matter what you are into, odds are there will be something you will enjoy. If being near big city night-life is important, you will want to live closer to downtown. For a quieter day-to-day, you will want to head out towards the suburbs. Just because you aren’t surrounded by skyscrapers, doesn’t mean you won’t find breathtaking views. In the suburbs you will find hills and beautiful oak trees all around. Keep in mind that the Austin housing market is very high as is the demand, so houses are in a higher price range and sell quickly. Make a list of must-haves for your home so that you are able to make a quick decision when the time comes. Knowing what you want will save you time and money throughout your house-hunting.
Transportation
Austin has a bus system that can get you to and from downtown with ease. There is also the Capital MetroRail that has lots of additions planned in the near future. Just make sure to plan your trip accordingly. If you don’t plan on having a car for personal use regularly, try to find a home near a bus stop.
