Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Instead of the usual bouquet of flowers, chocolates, or perfume, how about we get a little more creative and surprise our mothers on their special day? More than being creative, how about we give our moms something that lasts longer than a day? Here are my suggestions for Mother’s Day gifts that last longer.
A playlist of her favorite songs
There’s nothing quite like music to bring you back in time. When I think about my childhood, I think about my mother playing “Top of the World”, “Rainy Days and Mondays”, and “We’ve Only Just Begun” on the stereo all the time. To this day, when I hear any song from The Carpenters, I can’t help but wax nostalgic.
In whatever form, whether it’s a mix tape, a CD, an iTunes or a Spotify playlist, a collection of her favorite songs from when she was younger will guarantee a smile on her face. Make sure you have something that she can play it on right away, even if it means digging through storage for your old cassette player, Discman, or iPod.
A coupon book of chores for the year (if you live near her)
Your mom washed your clothes, prepared your meals, washed the dishes, and picked up after you EVERYDAY when you were growing up. Return the favor not just on Mother’s Day, but for many more days after that. Give her a coupon book that shows your available days and she can choose a coupon on the task that she wants or needs done. It doesn’t have to be just chores either. It could be a drive to the mall, doing the groceries, or accompanying her to the salon. Mix it up. If she needs something moved, offer to be her Moving Help® for the day. Surprise her with the many things she is entitled to in the coupons.
A regular phone call (if you live far from her)
No fancy jewelry or luxury liner cruise could compare to the gift of your time. Although if you could afford the previous two, it certainly wouldn’t hurt. Make her a promise to call every week. If you have to put it down on writing in a letter, a card, or a refrigerator magnet, go ahead. Even better than calling her regularly, show her how to make video calls using Skype, Facetime, or Google Hangouts, that is, if she doesn’t already know how. Being able to hear and see how you are and the bonus of seeing her grandchildren regularly, albeit remotely, is truly the Mother’s Day gift that lasts longer.
Empty space
How can taking something away from the moms in your life be a gift? It is if it’s the gift of extra room! Remove all of your stuff that’s taking up space in her house and put them in storage. That way, she can have all the space she needs for that crafts room, home office, or exercise area she’s always wanted. This is one present that’s really going to surprise her.
Put a little more thought into your Mother’s Day gift this year. Give her something she can continuously enjoy. Hopefully the ideas above inspire you to think of more Mother’s Day gifts that last longer.
