8 Reasons for Summer Storage

Aug 14, 2017

Are you planning any vacations this summer? Perhaps you have winter clothing taking up space in your closet. You may benefit from renting your storage unit for these and several other reasons! Here are 7 reasons for summer storage:

1. Snow Gear

If you enjoy snow sports during the winter, you most likely have some equipment around the house, such as skis, snowboards, and sleds. These things can quickly take up a lot of space, especially for larger families. With a self-storage unit, you can set this stuff aside and make room for your bathing suits and pool toys! Some items to put in summer storage are:

  • Skis
  • Poles
  • Snowboards
  • Helmets
  • Goggles
  • Sleds
  • Ski/Snowboard Boots
  • Shovels
  • Tire Chains

2. Winter Clothes

One of the best parts of the winter is getting all bundled up in your oversized coats and scarves. However, those heavy garments use much more space than summer clothing. Putting your winter wardrobe in a storage unit is a great way to create more than enough space for your summer items. There’s nothing worse than running late because your favorite shirt is hidden beneath a bunch of jackets! Here are some things you could put in your storage unit:

  • Heavy coats
  • Pants
  • Scarves
  • Earmuffs
  • Gloves
  • Heavy socks
  • Ski/Snowboard Bibs
  • Winter Shoes

3. Vacations and Long-Term Travel

Summer is a popular time to take vacations, especially for college students who are out of school. Whether sunbathing at the beach or relaxing in a quaint cabin, the last thing you want to worry about is the safety of your valuable items at home. With a storage unit, your items will be kept in a secure and monitored facility so you can sit back and enjoy your trip. Are you Retired? You can also utilize a storage unit during your post-retirement travels or if you are gone for a decent portion of the year because you own a second home!

4. RV, Boat or Automotive Storage

If you’re taking big summer trips, you may not want to leave your RV, boat or automobile unmonitored in the driveway. Like all your other precious items, there is storage for that! You may also have parking limitations in your neighborhood that prevent you from keeping these items at home. Luckily, you can choose between a few different storage options at U-Haul RV Storage locations:

  • Outdoor, uncovered parking
    • No need to worry about overhead clearance for tall equipment
  • Outdoor, covered parking
    • Overhead clearances vary by location (most about 14 feet, some up to 25)
    • Electrical outlets to charge equipment batteries
  • Indoor, enclosed parking
    • Most secure option
    • Similar clearance options to outdoor parking
    • Electrical outlets

5. Climate Control

Whether saving a hand-me-down couch for your child or setting aside special décor, there are some things you just don’t want in your home all year. If these things are made of a material that could be damaged by the summer heat, it’s time to opt for climate-controlled storage! These units are maintained between 65 and 85 degrees, helping to protect them from extreme temperatures and humidity. Some things you’ll want to put in climate-controlled storage are:

  • Antiques
  • Cosmetics & toiletries
  • Art & collectibles
  • Goods and furniture made of:
    • Leather
    • Wood
    • Metal
    • Or containing fabric/upholstery
  • Important paperwork
  • Electronics (TVs, stereos, computers, etc.)
  • Candles
  • Photographs and film
  • Medications/medical supplies
  • Wicker
  • Bicycles
  • Musical Instruments

6. Family Visits

If you have plans for your relatives to visit, you’ll need all the space you can get. You may even expect your college student to come home for the entire summer! Some of us are guilty of filling spare rooms with items that don’t fit anywhere else in the house (don’t worry, you’re not alone). If this is the case, a storage unit is a perfect opportunity to clear out a room so it’s comfortable for your family and friends.

7. College Summer Break

If you’re a college student who goes back home during the summers, you probably don’t want to take all of your belongings with you. Renting a storage unit near campus is a safe place to keep your items until you return for the fall semester. A few things you might want to keep in storage are your:

  • Bedding
  • Dorm Décor
  • Clothing (what you won’t wear in the summer)
  • Toiletries
  • Electronics
  • School supplies/books

8. Cleaning the Garage

A garage is a popular place for all sorts of things to accumulate–seasonal belongings, sports equipment, home improvement tools, and other miscellaneous items. Perhaps one of your summer projects is to create more garage space by organizing and clearing out some of those things. This can be a great family activity to do when school is out! Whatever you want to remove from the garage but still wish to keep can go in your storage unit!
