Reducing waste and preventing pollution are cornerstones to sustainability. It’s no secret that U-Haul moving boxes are sturdier than the competition. But did you know that U-Haul boxes are easily used several times? They are the perfect resource for an eco-friendly move. Check out the different ways to reduce, reuse and recycle during your move, starting with eco-friendly moving boxes.
How U-Haul Helps Sustainability

With more than 2,000 U-Haul Moving and Storage centers across the United States and Canada, chances are a location is near you. At each center there is a ‘Take A Box, Leave A Box’ station where customers drop off gently used moving boxes. Other customers can then pick them up for free. Occasionally, reusable packing supplies are also included. This program is just one part of U-Haul Company’s commitment to sustainability and having an eco-friendly move. It’s so successful, reuse of nearly a million boxes happens each year!
Buyback Guarantee

Alongside our ‘Take A Box, Leave A Box’ program, U-Haul promotes a critical eco-friendly initiative with its 100% Buyback Guarantee. Customers save an additional trip to a center by buying more boxes than needed. Any unused boxes are easily returned (with the original receipt) to a U-Haul center for a full refund.
Box Exchange

An added resource for boxes is the U-Haul Box Exchange. Customers can buy, sell or trade reusable boxes and moving supplies online. As another form of eco-friendly moving, with every reuse of a box, a new box doesn’t enter the cycle. After several uses, these boxes are ready for recycling. Whether you get U-Haul boxes in store, through ‘Take A Box, Leave A Box’ or online, they are a great choice for the cost- and environmentally-conscious consumer.
Ready-To-Go Boxes

U-Haul Ready-To-Go Boxes provide another eco-friendly option. Not to mention, they are a convenient way to store your valuables. There is no assembly or packing tape required. These sturdy, plastic moving boxes are also shared hundreds of times before being recycled. To use them, reserve your boxes for pick up at a local U-Haul location and keep them as long as you need to. When you’re done, return them to the same U-Haul location for the next customer! Who said recycling had to be difficult?
Furniture Pads

Finally, even these furniture pads are made of recycled material! Each rental furniture pad is made of denim scraps. The process reclaims textile waste from blue jean manufacturing. With a high demand for furniture pads, this decision to use regenerated cotton scraps prevents waste. Annually, it saves over 2.4 million pounds of recyclable materials from landfills.
Biodegradable Packing Peanuts

U-Haul offers biodegradable packing peanuts made primarily of corn and potato starch. This means you don’t have to worry about keeping them away from pets and kids. Switching to biodegradable peanuts over everyday Styrofoam is an easy way to support a sustainable move. To date, U-Haul customers have kept 7 million cubic feet of Styrofoam out of landfills!
