It was very confusing finding the entrance. A guy named Ron was helpful. But I’m here tonight, entered my code and the garage won’t open. Supposed to get access up to 10 and it’s 8:45. This is an unsafe neighborhood. Not a place to hang out in the cold. No one answers when you push the call button. I try the LiveChst but it won’t Begin. The keypad next to the storage gate/door doesn’t work.
Amy S | Online Move InMy unit was broken into and I paid insurance for more than 7 years and the staff denied that fact that my unit was clearly tampered with. I filed the claim and was denied. My alarm was cut in which we showed one of your employees and the Assistant manager who was a female. She said I’ll report what I saw because it was that obvious. Oh and the reason why it was denied because the Manager told them that my unit was not broken into…he was not there to be able to make that statement. However, I will say thank you all for my stay.

DEO JMy pick up location was changed without notice to a location which added 20 miles to my one rental. It was done by the scheduling team without any communication or adjustment to the rental to accommodate the additional miles. This was very disappointing.

BRIAN BMT1355A trailer's little wheels instead of full size causes the trailer to bounce repeatedly while driving bouncing the motorcycle in-town and streets. I suggest replacing those wheels.

JENNIFER RLatron (I think that was his name) was great at checking me out and lady who checked me in was great as well. This Uhaul location has the friendliest and most efficient staff I’ve ever dealt with. It’s why I always use their services even though there are locations closer to my home.
MARRIA ERandall and Lavon (sp?) were so friendly and helpful with getting me set up. All the staff I talked with were great. Bathrooms were also immaculate. Didn’t have a favorite U-Haul location before, but I do now! Team at the San Leandro location are going above and beyond.

Alana PIn Home Depot we rented the truck cheaper and everything was cleared but U-Haul doesn’t. There’s hidden fees. They charged me fuel service fee for $30. What’s that???

LATRICIA SWe reserved a 5x9 trailer with ramp for pick up on Saturday and to be dropped off at a different location. We have received an email confirmation. When it was time to pick up the trailer, we were told that the trailer that was reserved for us was accidentally given to a different customer. However they still had a few 5x9 trailers but those ones needed to stay in-town and could not be dropped off at a different location. We were very disappointed, but since we already drove 2 hours we had no choice but to get the one they have. We were told the trailer has to be returned (we were given a few days). But with my husband schedule, the only time that would work for the return was to drive out the same night. We came from Sacramento, picked up the trailer from Oakland, went back to Sac, and then drove back to Oakland again. That was more than 10 hours on the road and 400 miles total driving. It was very disappointing. We made sure to make the reservation a couple of days prior and made the necessary arrangements. But at the end, their mistake had still caused us so much inconvenience.

ROSE VI had an absolutely amazing experience at the U-Haul on 81st St. in Oakland. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by how smoothly everything was running. Ron was a true multitasking pro—patiently answering phone calls, assisting customers at the counter, and keeping the line moving without missing a beat. You could tell they were experienced, calm under pressure, and genuinely cared about getting everyone what they needed. What stood out most was the level of professionalism and courtesy. The place was clean, organized, and the equipment was in top shape. Even with a full lobby, the team made each customer feel like a priority. They made the rental process fast and painless, which is rare in today’s world. This isn’t just a U-Haul—it’s the gold standard. If every location operated like this one, moving wouldn’t be stressful at all. Hats off to the team here for running what might just be the best U-Haul in the world. Highly recommended!

ERNEST REverything was fine until return , I had to return the truck after hours and there was a weird glitch with the app when I tried to pay it said that my card had the wrong expiration date,but the charge was already on my account, it was strange but it worked out, I kept getting receipts for the next 2 days for the same thing which was weird.

ALEXANDRA PSeveral anchor points inside were broken. They were labeled already by u haul so they were known to be broken. I wasn’t advised in advance and it was quite inconvenient. I rent a lot from u-haul and this time it didn’t go well. The staff was terrific, however.

MICHAEL DI had a code to get into the storage, but there was a U-Haul truck parked right in front of the door and roll up door so we had to go around the truck with a tight squeeze. Then the roll up door didn’t work so we had put heavy stuff on the cart and we couldn’t go through the door with the heavy cart since you had to pull up on the cart in order to get the wheels over the step something that should have taken an hour ended up being 3 🤬

DANA M | Overall ExperienceI had no problem until the other day, like Dec 20th when a woman call my phone asking me if I wanted to close my storage because she could somehow tell that I had nothing in my storage even though I had two locks on it. I told her no thank you and that I want to come down to look at my storage and verify that I did not leave any personals in there. She insisted on her just closing out the unit because she said she verified there was nothing in there which made me upset. I doubled down by saying no thank you, please do not close the storage without my confirmation, I said thank you and that’s when we got off the phone. And hour later I got in my car to visit my storage unit and both of my locks were broken off and nothing but a green tag was on the handle of the unit meaning she disregarded everything I said and closed out my unit anyway. When I got to my unit, I took off that tag to open the unit and look around and the unit had been swept clean, now I don’t know if I left any of my personal items in there since the last time I was in there, I grabbed things Quickly without really being thorough because I already knew I was gonna be back-and-forth over the month to move my stuff into my apartment. I went into the office and complained about it. I’m sure I am on camera visibly confused in that office. I hope no one else experiences this, and that whatever employee that was responsible for doing that are held accountable. Unit #0925

The card opens the door long enough for a vehicle to get down the ramp but I found I had to walk back up the ramp to reswipe and re open the door that I was unable to finish unloading and having to keep an already late truck another day. Miserable set up very poorly thought through in my opinion.

I called a day in advance of move in to double check if there was any additional information that I needed to provide or if I just needed to show up. I was told just to show up and they would take care of everything once I arrived. When I arrived to the facility they said the following, "I'm not sure if anybody told you yet, but we don't have any 10'x10' available, so I have 2, 5'x10' available you can use. WHAT????? It may seem like a small detail, but I was counting on a unit that was specifically 10'x10' because of the extra bulky items I needed to store. It was far more difficult to manage the 2, 5'x10' units and I'm completely appauled by the attitude and disregard for the staff and the reservation process. I drove all the way from Montana in a 20' U-Haul truck to land at this facility to be told the unit I reserved A MONTH AGO was not available, AND NOBODY TOLD ME ANYTHING. I was exhausted. I will NEVER use this facility again.

I researched multiple storage options and facilities online, and even attempted to model unit sizes in my living room but, I still felt uncertain. Finally, (I was running out of time), I decided to visit U Haul. I had decided to go with a U Haul storage unit because I had positive experiences talking to team members on the phone when I had questions, using the app, and friends recommended it based on their experiences. I was greeted by a team member outside the front door who directed me to the model units in the show room. Upon entering, I was pleased to see clean restrooms and all the moving supplies I needed to grab last-minute were available for purchase or rental. A team member asked me questions to get a better idea of what I needed to store. Before my visit, I wasn’t 100% sure which location to choose, but I was impressed by the customer service. I was surprised that I was able to sign up for and get access to the unit right away. Another team member guided me to my unit. I knew it would be smaller than the 10X10 I saw in the showroom but I felt worried when I saw the 6X10 unit in person. I did not voice this concern at the moment because I was in a rush and decided to go home and take some measurements. I will likely call tomorrow and ask if a larger unit is available but either way, I am glad I went in person because now I feel WAY more prepared for my moving day. Thank you!

The website said I'd get a drive up unit, when I arrived they said indoor and that they don't even have drive-up units. The code system to get into the facility is so awful, it's a 10 digit code that you have to enter 95 times because the doors close every time you walk through for security. So ridiculous. And we drove up from LA and arrived at 4pm, they said we had less than an hour to unpack because the facility and access close at 5pm. There's only one line whether you're purchasing one single lock or getting storage or returning equipment so you stand there for 45 minutes to make a single purchase. So much wrong with this system.

I spoke to the facility representatives (3) each one said they will look into this matter and call me back. The system account is closed do to a zero balanced. Please Refund.

Michael Q | First ImpressionsThe facility was clean, most of the staff were friendly except for one woman who made comments of how it was my fault that the process was taking too long even though it was clear that the front desk person was struggling to complete the paperwork and had to start over several times. I was not prepared for the long wait and it cost me an extra hour with the moving company that was waiting in the parking lot while I desperately tried to get the storage set up. Plus we couldn't drive up to the storage so we had to put all my furniture on carts to get it underground. I was under the impression that the storage had been reserved for me and all I had to do was go to the front desk and get my key. f I had known all this at the time the U-Haul person offered the free one-month I would have passed because it ended up costing me with the moving company anyway. Since moving is one of the most stressful experiences a person could go through, I suggest that the U-Haul customer service explain how the process works so there wouldn't be extra stress and expenses.

And I don't know how the manager does it...having each employee so well trained and so eager to help the customer with a smile and so quickly? I'd hate to lose her from our location as manager (8000 San Leandro Blvd, Oakland California) but I think it's time to move that young lady up to a regional position with a massive pay raise! She's a keeper! And she genuinely seems to absolutely LOVE her job. She must just enjoy making people happy! Awesome experience with U-haul. We have a couple of 5×10 units and definitely will be keeping our business with you guys and every chance I get I tell all our contacts about the wonderful service and products at our local store. ALLAN B | First ImpressionsI waited 20min with the front desk representative who was unpleasant (wearing his hood on, having his EarPods on, not having his name tag on). Once I got my storage room number, he told me this location did not have access with a U-Haul truck and that I could only use available carts to travel back and forth between their main parking lot and the basement where my storage room is. When I inquired about possibility to upgrade to another room in order to have access with the truck, the representative started to answer defensively, almost aggressively. He told me that this was all I could get for now considering their current occupancy. I was disappointed as I booked a truck and a driveway through storage unit simultaneously on purpose, and was expecting more compassion from him. I therefore spent easily twice more time than expected in unloading the truck and traveling with the carts to the storage room. Thankfully, the other staff members I had the chance to interact with during a full day of unloading were more friendly and professional. I traveled 400 mi with a U-Haul truck and booked a storage room at U-Haul to ease my move in/out process. Sadly, this did not happen, and I am not recommending their services.

One thing, not sure what your standards are for a unit being ready, but there were a lot of rat poison traps in the unit that was offered to us. I understand that it was very last minute and again so grateful for the amazing extra steps that the team took however, I don’t know how someone else might feel opening up their storage unit to find a lot of rat poison in it. Overall, though I recommend U-Haul and U-Haul storage to anybody who is moving or needs a place to keep extra things.

The only negative point I have is that my locker was broken into sometime between 24 Feb and 16 March by someone who cut the U-HAUL lock that was securing the door. I lost a queen mattress and many personal items that I was storing for friends who shared an apartment with me. I did turn in to the manager evidence that was dumped into my locker that may identify the person(s) that stole the items. Fortunately, I did take out insurance when I rented the locker.

The manager assured me she would give me a call once they reviewed the footage. Nothing, which led me to why I moved out. Also during move out there was water damage to my stuff I had to throw away photo albums and clothes due to its damage. We informed the office and they said if I think there was a flood a while back. Never once apologized for not calling once again when there was an issue. Terrible service and facility, been a customer for over 10years and this is how we were treated. So happy to move out!

No other times had been communicated to me I had rented and truck as well and was bringing my last load to the storage unit to finish out the move and was going to return the truck immediately after. We arrived at 8:15pm and the storage unit was already closed for the night with the shutter over the door. Because of this I had to scramble to find a place to store the full truck and extend my rental to finish the next day, as well as drive extra miles for the wasted trip. This resulted in me having to pay more for my truck rental than I would have otherwise

I told Uhaul Oakland I was done with the storage unit the next day. I went online to “move out” of the storage unit. Since then I have received numerous emails from Uhaul Oakland telling me my rent is due. Uhaul Oakland has been by far the most disorganized and disappointing organization I have ever worked with. To add to the whole experience, many of the workers think that customer service means gaslighting and combativeness. I decline to “resolve any disputes” any longer; in my experience with them, nothing ever gets resolved.

They have a young man working there who doesn’t care about helping people. He was supposed to walk and show me my unit - we couldn’t find it and then he ends up walking away and scrolling on his phone. Seriously ??? I finally found a unit, moved in. And, when it was time to move out, I did so. I confirmed my move out in person, got a receipt and returned my key. But I was charged for an additional month!! I noticed they hadn’t “moved” me out in their records. I called the main U-Haul line and this Oakland line. I called 5 times!!! The service was horrendous - people hung up on me, people said they’d call me back, people said they couldn’t help. Like what?! Then I had to DRIVE all the way back to this Oakland location (mind you, I’ve moved out of the area) just to get my refund and be “moved” out in their records. And with no apology. Beware.

The unit is difficult to load as there’s no direct access, and the sliding access door closes too quickly to pick up items again after sliding the key card. Two of the garage doors for cars to load were not functional, adding even more distance to carry items to the unit. I waited about an hour just to get a key to a unit to move in.

We saw many people come and go while we just stood there. We told them our information about six times. And after we finally got a unit it was a five min walk plus an elevator. We told them we had a lot of really heavy stuff and needed to be close. So we had to wait again and we got one close this time but after we paid n got the key, our ten by ten unit was actually very very small and not a ten by ten unit at all. So we weren’t even able to put all of our stuff in there. It was absolutely horrible. Especially for our first experience there. 1/10.

I can only suggest some customer service training for Ashley and if she truly is a manager at that facility, then her negative behavior is a reflection of how she operates and represents the company. I strongly recommend a promotion to the gentleman who completed our rental registration his service to us was excellent.
George B | Overall ExperienceProperty manager is running a long standing bait and switch scam. Rental contract states that storage access is 5am to 10pm. Office hours are 7am to 7pm. In reality the storage facility is only open during office hours. I asked several employees, and was told by all that the storage facility has never been open from 5am to 10pm, that it has always been 7am to 7pm, but the manager requires that they lie to customers until after they have rented a storage unit. There are also customer reviews on website going back over a year with same complaint. When I called customer support, they contacted the manager and he lied to them, saying that access hours had recently changed. I rented the unit only one day before. When I got into the unit the next day, I saw that the type of door that is on the storage facility can't be operated remotely by keypad, and can only be operated manually by employees during office hours, so there has never been a time that this facility could be accessed by renters from 5am to 10pm.

Kind of scary with the width of the wheel wells in the six by eight trailer while driving through road construction areas where they use concrete standing balustrades as it feels so narrow and the trailer feels so wide. None of these issues (besides the difficult physical distance between the unit and truck parking) would have been that big of deal, except this place is seriously understaffed to the point where every little question meant waiting in line for at least 20 minutes. Nothing against the workers, but this place is horribly managed. Would definitely not use again.

The next day I came back and spoke with the staff in the main office and they were very accommodating. They assisted me in getting a new unit. Gave me a lock. We’re very kind and assisted me in locating the unit. They apologized for the call buttons not working and stated they’d make a note. They were able to save my very negative first experiences.

That change adds up and is done in a non suspecting way.

MICHAEL M | First ImpressionsWhen buying the storage unit I was told to get a lock because its needed with the unit; on U-Haul website it said id get the lock for free. When I realized I was being charged for it I showed the cashier and he basically shrugged it off saying "oh yeah I wasn't aware of that, looks like you do get it for free" turn proceeded to charge me. When I was getting the truck the guy asked my how many miles am I driving, how would I know? That should be fine at the end when I return the van not at the beginning. So I just said 10. then it got marked up with 5.5 gallons of gas then it actually had. Because I didn't check on the lot I was responsible for the gas so I had to fill up $26 of gas for a 4 mile round trip. When I returned the van and saw I only drove 4 miles I realized I paid a total of $20 for the van $40 for rental fees $26 for gas $15 for 10 miles. The world's most expensive 4 mile trip. They wouldn't reimburse me for the extra gas I paid. When I finally got to my storage unit I found a mouse trap inside.. that along with another customer at the front desk talking about how his unit flooded does not give me confidence in this place at all. The only positive experience about this whole ordeal is when I went to return the lock the lady was unable to return it for some reason so she just gave me it's cost out of her own pocket.

There was only one customer representative at the front desk when I arrived and even though she was friendly and helpful once it was my turn, the person who helped show me to my unit afterward didn't explain to me the storage layout or building access outside of using my key card. I had to go back to the front desk to find out there was not a loading dock for my items and that the uhaul truck wasn't actually allowed into the storage unit. There was only one hand truck available for use and the driveway for moving items in and out of the storage unit was heavily trafficked with moving cars. The whole process was very stressful and makes me unsure about renting from the storage facility in the future, at least at this particular location.

It should be clear about how I will be able to access my unit so that I can come prepared with the right truck & / or cars. A unit should be accessible using your trucks. I've been a storage customer of yours FOR YEARS. When I called the your local branch on Friday evening in tears, I was all but hung up on. I'm appalled. You left a huge stain on a very big moment for my family and I. I will submit a formal grievance, and have told anyone who has asked that u-haul is to be avoided. That false sense of security you call a reservation for something critical has got to stop.

The unit flooded (no fault of them and it was handled) but I was offered free months for my unit etc and then week after week I had issues with them sending me late payment emails and then “going to Lien” emails over and over again despite the manager calling and telling me this “wouldn’t happen again and I am handling it” Yesterday was the final time I got such an email and the manager FINALLY actually fixed the issue so she claimed but I don’t feel confident in the way this place is run. The other staff was helpful and nice but it’s just frustrating to be told 4x that something is handled and then continue to have the same issue for months I’m hoping it is handled now but I am less than happy due to the repeated issues with management after being told multiple times it was going to be taken care of only to find out it hadn’t been Happy to speak to someone in more detail if needed and again hope as of yesterday that this issue is actually resolved

The first issue was that I placed an online reservation for a unit and on the day I try to move in I learn that the unit I reserved is not available and no reservation was made. My only comparable option was a slightly larger unit with higher cost. Because I was in need of storage immediately, I decided I had to sign up for something and accepted the higher cost but was not compensated for the lack of availability and absence of a reserved unit. My second, much worse, issue is that the online office and access hours are WRONG. When we moved in we were not informed that the information online was out of date. We believed we’d have access to our unit until 10pm and come to find out we only had access until 7pm, on the following day it was even earlier - until 5pm only. When I went to confirm this with the office staff all I was told was “the website is wrong.” There was no further explanation, no offer of help or accommodation, and from there only frequent reminders that we needed to be done moving in by 7pm. I do not understand how information as important as office and access hours are not updated in all relevant locations and how the staff does not proactively mention this to tenants to account for the gap. Ultimately, I decided to rent this unit because I’d already trucked my items to the location and needed immediate storage, but if I’d had more of a choice I would have gone somewhere else. Access hours and customer service have been terrible and I will not recommend this facility to anyone.

When booking on the phone, the attendant was very short and only gave me closing hours for the location with no indication of how long the process would take to actually obtain the storage unit. After a very long and stressful drive involving roadside assistance, I arrived just before closing hours on Sunday, only to be told I was too late and would have to leave the loaded truck overnight and unload in the morning. Luckily the staff extended my hours so I could unload the next morning, but the immense stress and disruption of family members' schedules the next day could have been avoided if I had been told anything about the process ahead of time. As for the facilities, the first unit I was shown had not been cleaned, and the one I ultimately chose had some oil stains on the floor, but other than that seemed decently well-maintained and appeared to have plenty of security. I find it odd that the clearance is so low on the storage facilities themselves, since it would make sense for U-Haul trucks to be able to fit down into the U-Haul storage buildings, but I appreciated the carts that were publicly available. Overall, the staff and facilities met my expectations, but please make the process more transparent for first-time movers, including tips and recommendations, and how long to expect the process to take.

It was the worst customer interaction I have ever had. People at the front desk, they don't know what they are doing. They gave us the wrong unit number and we walked to that unit and when we come back they told us it was the wrong unit. This happened 3 times and on the 4th time, they told us that they don't have any available units on the 2nd floor that's why we need to take the elevator. Even though the facility is nice, the experience was worst. I hope they select their employers carefully at the next time.

Went to the office and ask where are the correct keys oh we have them here so things were stolen because they gave the wrong keys out here are some of the items that was stolen and some of my things was stolening. Weed eater clothes,pictures, kitchen items, shoes, was stolen. Things was taken out of box and put in bags very disappointed. I call every day and no U-box. Was toll you could take your stuff to Hayward U-Box. You can call me tomorrow to see if U-box or here. Reply nothing ! As a customer for so long I was not pleased with the way it was handled. Move my stuff out of storage . on that day I move out, I asked if any inbox in .She reply the lacth was broken . So I had to take my business somewhere else. Move out storage unit on 6/15 /20 asked if there would be a refund for the remaining of the 15 days on unit . She said oh we don't give refund. Was disappointed on that respond.

Leilani R | First ImpressionsThe facility seems to have discarded and or stolen goods. I have no recourse it would seem. Facility’s own pipes burst and flooded the facility to include my unit. The way things played out I’m left feeling as though I paid for someone to take advantage of me and even steal from me both my money and my personal effects (many of which were BRAND NEW and yet to be utilized) but it’s a corporation so they are going to protect themselves from liabilities and not always do what is right by customers if it means compensating them or taking a loss to do the right thing. The STRONG feeling of having been taken advantage of and having deep regret that I trusted and paid this uhaul facility to secure and safe store my goods is the reason for my poor rating and STRONG desire to discourage others (especially military families and those who rely heavily on storage facilities with the majority of their property) to trust/utilize another facility and even company for your temporary or long term storage needs. If you don’t have trust what is there...? In the end based on the company’s insurance company handling me the way they did and how so much of my stuff is missing with no recourse I’m left realizing that when it comes to uhaul I’m just a little person vs. a big cold company. Aside from Uhaul’s Marissa Mendez (who is usual’s one bright spot) and all her earnest efforts to make things right I have nothing absolutely nothing positive to take away from my experience with uhaul and the Oakland Coliseum storage location/facility.
