Adaptive Reuse in Oklahoma City, OK at U-Haul Moving & Storage of Crossroads

Building History

In 1960: the average cost of a new home was $12,700; a gallon of gas cost 25 cents; and this building for P&A Construction, Inc. was built. In 1977: the average cost of a new home was $49,300; a gallon of gas cost 65 cents; and U-Haul purchased this abandoned building for adaptive reuse. As another interesting tidbit of reuse history, the ‘barn’ marked with the orange and white arrow, just behind this building, houses a hitch bay and U-Box warehouse. The ‘barn’ was built in western Oklahoma in the mid-1900s to serve an oilfield supply company before being moved to serve U-Haul customers at this Oklahoma City location in 1977.

Oklahoma City has long recognized the cultural and economic value of adaptive reuse, publishing its own Building Conservation and Rehabilitation Guidelines. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction, a timeless value for our community.
