Building History

The Menards home improvement retail chain was originally founded by John Menard Junior in 1958. At that time, Mr. Menard saw a thriving dairy industry that was rapidly becoming industrialized and searching for ways to fuel efficiency and growth. He saw an opportunity to provide affordable agricultural buildings to these farms by building sturdy poles for barn frames. During his first summer of business, he worked diligently building pole barns and paid his way by working at the local movie theatre in the evenings.

After a year of erecting pole building structures throughout Wisconsin, his company was finally building a name for itself. He expanded his equipment, his crew and even constructed his first office building. The same customers who were purchasing pole buildings were asking for other building materials like lumber, so Menard began selling additional building materials for cash. This retail expansion was the beginning of Menard Cashway Lumber.

In 1969, Menard's added manufacturing warehouses to their portfolio. They began manufacturing and selling building materials such as trusses, steel siding, metal roofing, doors, composite decking, lumber, stone, block, fasteners and more. In 1994, the company sold the Menard Buidling Division, and the pole barn construction halted. The company focused solely on expanding their home improvement retail centers, growing to several locations in 14 different states.

The Menard's building was built in 1966 and U-Haul acquired the property for adaptive reuse in 2017. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.

Environmental Impact

Serving U-Haul customers since 2017, this facility was built through adaptive reuse of an abandoned building. Adaptive reuse promotes infill development in an effort to strengthen communities, with the following benefits achieved at this site:
