Adaptive Reuse in Midwest City, OK at U-Haul Moving & Storage of Midwest City

Building History

The Dodge Motor Company was originally founded by brothers, John and Horace Dodge, in 1914. The four-cylinder Dodge Model 30/35 touring car was the first vehicle that the brothers debuted together with a completely original design. The brothers were given a 10% share of the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan when they were propositioned to supply critial engine and chassis parts for the original Ford Model A in 1903. Ford would later buy the brothers out of their share holding in 1916, which netted them a total of 25 million dollars on top of their annual dividends. Unfortunately, John Dodge became very sick with pneumonia and quickly died and his brother Horace fell ill with liver cirrhosis a few short months after. Their untimely deaths happened merely 4 years after they had earned the largest sum of their lifetime, leaving them little time to enjoy the fruits of their labor. The company would be inherited by the spouses of both brothers and in 1925 was sold to an invesment bank, Dillon, Read & Company. Dillon, Read and Co. would eventually sell the company to the Chrysler Corporation in 1928. The former Dodge Brothers' company lived on to design and create many iconic vehicles. By the 1960’s Dodge would became involved in NASCAR racing and the Dodge Charger quickly became an American muscle car staple.

In the early1980s, the Dodge Motor Company chose to relocate from this site to a block away, to a larger lot, to serve Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram buyers in the surrounding nineteen cities. The Midwest City Dodge building was built in 1968 and U-Haul acquired the property in 1982. Adaptive reuse building conversions allow U-Haul to promote infill development to meet citizens’ needs while preserving the natural resources and land normally required for new construction. Adaptive reuse also allows resources to be focused on integrating environmentally thoughtful features into the existing building rather than creating waste in the form of demolition and using valuable resources for new construction.
