How U-Haul Reviews WorkI chose counter pickup specifically because I have had poor experiences with the U Haul app in the past. I spent time on the phone with U Haul beforehand arranging the rental and confirming exactly what I needed. I wanted to pick the truck up from a person, walk around it, and make sure I understood the condition of the vehicle I was about to be responsible for. That unfortunately did not happen. When I arrived, there was no clear U Haul pickup or checkout area. The location operates as a truck stop with several other businesses, and finding someone to actually assist with the U Haul rental took some time. Once I found someone, the process immediately became confusing. The employee told me he had “saved me $60,” which concerned me because I had already arranged my order with U Haul. I repeatedly asked what had been changed and why. He initially said he needed to verify what I had, then eventually told me he could not see the original U Haul order. After roughly 20 minutes of frustrating back and forth, he handed me a key and told me to finish the checkout through the app. That was especially frustrating because I had intentionally selected counter pickup to avoid using the app. When I got to the truck, there were cigarette ashes across the dashboard, dirt on the seats and floor, broken trim around the passenger door, and the dashboard showed 0% oil life remaining. I asked for another truck or for the oil to be changed before I left. Both requests were refused. I was told I would not be responsible for the damaged trim, but there was very little concern about the condition or maintenance of the vehicle. Because of the oil life reading, I called U Haul Roadside Assistance and had the condition documented on my rental before continuing. Within about a mile, once I reached normal road speed, the passenger door sounded like it was partially open, possibly because of damaged or missing weather stripping. I returned to the location and demonstrated the issue. Again, it was brushed off and I was simply told I would not be charged for it. About 10 miles later, the check engine light came on, which meant another call to Roadside Assistance. The truck ultimately completed the rental, but the entire experience created unnecessary stress. I spent the weekend driving a fully loaded rental wondering whether the vehicle was going to break down. My biggest frustration is that almost all of this could have been avoided with a properly inspected and maintained truck, a clean vehicle, and a pickup process that actually respected the method and order the customer had already arranged. I understand rental vehicles are not going to be perfect, but 0% oil life, a check engine light, damaged door trim, excessive wind noise, a dirty interior, and being refused another vehicle or basic maintenance is not what I expected from a professional rental experience.
SHAY NI opted for mobile pickup at 8 am, when checking in I was notified mobile was not an option and no one at the facility could check me in for half an hour. The vehicle was in need of mechanical love, it would jerk violently when accelerating up a hill, there was no air ride or suspension springs in good condition so every little crack in the road felt major. When I arrived at my loading destination the vehicle’s electric system failed immediately and it would not turn on. I had to keep the engine running for hours just so the truck wouldn’t die. Roadside assistance called twice to address the same issue, caused multiple hours of delays and waiting that made the whole day a whole lot harder than it needed to be.
Patrick NI used the app to drop off the truck. There wasn't any directional signs into the large truck stop parking lot. No Uhaul signage directing where to drop the truck only a lockbox on the corner of the building. Not impressed with the direction Uhaul has taken. I won't be using Uhaul again.
Shawn Rprinted sheet of paper proving we rented the truck BEFORE turning the truck over to us.
