Moving Tips to Vancouver, WA
Just north of the Columbia River from Portland, Vancouver is the fourth largest city in Washington with roughly 165,000 residents. Located in the southwestern portion of the state, Vancouver experiences a similar climate as many northwestern cities with mostly dry summers with the occasional chilly breeze from the Pacific Ocean. During the fall/winter months from October to May, you can expect steady to heavy rainfall that can also bring ‘silver thaw,’ which has been known to form on the roads (it’s a fancy way to say icy road surfaces). If you are moving during the winter months, be sure to be extra cautious on your drive. With a friendly, laidback population and breathtaking natural views of the mountains, Vancouver is a wonderful place to consider as your future home.
Valuable Insights into Moving to and Living in Vancouver
With more than 20 truck rental locations in Vancouver alone, we are dedicated to helping you make a smooth move into the city. Here are some more helpful hints for when you are moving to and living in Vancouver, Washington.
- Work Commute – Many of Vancouver’s residents work in Portland, just over the Columbia River. The Interstate Bridge and the Glenn Jackson Bridge are the only ways to commute between the two cities. This can bring high traffic congestion during rush hour. If you have to take these routes during your move, plan accordingly to avoid any unnecessary headaches.
- Choosing a Neighborhood – For an urban setting, Downtown Vancouver is a fantastic option; there are numerous restaurants, retail shops, and more within walking distance. If you are moving to Vancouver with younger children, Orchards and Fishers Landing are great places to start looking. Housing on the east side of Vancouver near the interstates should put you in a good place for schooling, nearby amenities and low crime rates.
- Outdoorsman’s Paradise – There is no shortage of things to do outdoors in Vancouver. For a relaxing time, Vancouver Lake is the place to be for swimming, picnicking, or taking a spin on a paddleboat. If you enjoy sitting back and hanging out with a nice beverage, there are multiple breweries and vineyards nearby as well. If you are a fast paced outdoorsman, you can take a jet ski or speed boat out on the Columbia River, go kayaking or canoeing on Lacamas Lake, hike up Moulton Falls, rollerblade the Renaissance Trail, or grab your fishing poles and catch your dinner on the Washougal River. If you need some extra space for your outdoors equipment, U-Haul has many storage options to keep your new home clutter free.
- Esther Short Park – The oldest public park in the state of Washington, Esther Short is a great place to get acclimated to your new home once you’re settled. For starters, over 250 vendors gather at the Vancouver Farmers Market in Esther Short Park. Furthermore the park is also home to numerous, free concerts during the summer months. Break out your lawn chairs, enjoy some good local music, meet some new people and make memories that will last forever. Don’t forget to bring the kids’ swimsuits; there is a fountain in the park that is very popular with children who enjoy playing in the water.
